Salman Taseer's killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

Why is this man still alive? And what does this says about people in law enforcement?

ISLAMABAD: Mumtaz Qadri, a policeman jailed for murdering Punjab governor Salman Taseer, in a religiously-motivated attack incited a prison guard to shoot an elderly British man convicted of blasphemy, according to an internal inquiry.

Mohammad Asghar, whom British doctors say is seriously mentally ill, was shot and wounded by a guard at Adiyala jail in Rawalpindi last month.

The 70-year-old was sentenced to death for blasphemy in January for claiming to be a prophet in a case that has prompted concern from British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The prison guard Mohammad Yousuf had spent more than two weeks guarding Qadri, who killed Taseer three years ago, a senior jail official said.

He said an initial inquiry by a four-member committee found that Qadri had also prepared two other prison officers to hunt down blasphemy convicts in the prison.

“The accused [Yousuf] was deployed outside the cell of Mumtaz Qadri during the incident and he had confessed to taking religious lessons from him,” the jail official said on condition of anonymity.

The claims will heighten concerns about staff being radicalised by hardline inmates in aging and overcrowded prisons.

Qadri, who was Taseer’s bodyguard, shot him dead at an Islamabad coffee shop over the politician’s call for blasphemy laws to be reformed.

Qadri was feted as a hero by a wide section of the public, including lawyers, and was even showered with rose petals as he arrived at court for a trial hearing.

The official’s account of events was supported by three other prisoners held in the same part of the jail, who said guards regularly took religious instruction from Qadri.

“I was sleeping when I woke to the sound of gunshots and I saw the prison staff grabbing one of their fellows while Asghar was lying on the ground in a pool of blood,” an inmate living next to Asghar’s cell said.

A second prisoner who saw the attack said a guard appeared in the wing and demanded to know where Asghar was.

“The prison staff usually shout at us and I thought Asghar’s family or lawyers must have sent him something, so I didn’t pay any attention, but then I heard the first gunshot,” the prisoner said.

He said Asghar was trying to hide in the bathroom area of his cell while the gunman was firing at him.

“He was lucky that he reached the bathroom and the other prison staff arrived to grab the assassin, otherwise he would have been killed”, he said.

Asghar, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in Britain in 2010, had declared his prophethood in court and included a reference to it on his business card, a government prosecutor said at the time of his trial.

Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue in Pakistan, where 97 per cent of the population is Muslim, and insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) can carry the death penalty.

They are too scared to execute him. This guy is essentially untouchable. The only hope for justice is the hope that Qadri decides to take a shower too close to an electrical appliance.

Re: Salman Taseer's killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

I agree he'll never be executed. Not now not in any other govt. Nobody dares to go against religious rhetoric which are and will reamin in favor of this guy.

Will the judiciary ever dare to punish Mumtaz Qadri for his crime?

He is inciting violence, and carrying out his form of justice even behind bars. So will he ever actually receive punishment for murder in first degree?

in short - No!!

Re: Salman Taseer's killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

par jaltey hain. Forget Qadri, NS/Zardari does not even have guts to execute Taliban *convicts *(who have murdered 100s and 1000s)

Remember Taliban threatened NS govt not to execute any convict and NS obliged. Qadri's case is even more worst. Many stupid, including our own Lahore Highcourt's X chief Justice (Khawaja Sharif) think he is some kind of hero.

Re: Salman Taseer's killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

While we have an ongoing shameful issue of glorifying of Qadri.

It was simply quite disgusting of MQM - the so called self proclaimed liberal and secular party - to legitimize this disastrous blasphemy law by lodging a court case against Khourshid Shah over the word 'Muhajir'. It was so sickening. I'm surprised no one here called them out for that. What were MQM thugs trying to achieve? Were they hoping to make Khourshid Shah the next Salman Taseer by invoking the religious fanatics? Bloody charlatans.

Re: Salman Taseer's killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

This Qadri clown is infuriating. There is a special place in hell reserved for these sort of scum.

Meanwhile, his victims are being insulted and degenerated across the idiot spectrum. What a cruel world. I feel for Salman TaseerS family who have to see their fathers murderer turned into a hero.

Re: Salman Taseer's killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

Blasphemy law seems to be becoming a useful political tool. They did the same with Geo not to long ago. I mean, was it any coinicdence that this sudden charge of blasphemy was leveled after accusation made by Geo against the Army?

MQM is just a bit less experienced in using the tactic.

Re: Salman Taseer’s killer incited shooting of elderly blasphemy inmate: inquiry

Liberal parties certainly don’t forcefully shut down all local TV channels for not cutting short a useless speech or ceremony.

Both PPP and MQM just like to toss the word ‘liberal’ and ‘secular’ without really knowing what it actually means. Both parties get just nefariously Mullah on personal lives of opposition when they’re challenged on their governance, they’re the types to give Mullah Fazlu a run for his money the way fatwas and call for yahoordi saazish come out of their mouths.

It was highly irresponsible and disgusting of MQM to lodge a blasphemy case in HC against Shah. I wonder if they are disappointed that Shah didn’t meet Taseer’s fate, otherwise what other logic and humanity can you sense behind such decision? It could’ve made some sort of sense had they filed a case on anti racism ground, but word ‘Muhajir’ is an insult to Prophet? Pathetic.

For once I’m glad that religious right did not fall for MQM’s trap. Maybe there’s still some hope.

Maybe there is a deal with the abductors of Shahbaz Taseer that they will keep Taseer alive as long as Qadri is alive

Such is the case where extra judicial killing is justified. Kill the guy in jail, and spread the rumor that he attacked a guard with knife, or was escaping the jail or some other crap
