Was he the person who gave Prophet Muhammad :saw: and the companions refuge from the kuffar-e-makkah for a period of time?. What is the significance of Salman Farsi in early Islamic history?

From what I remember, he was a slave of Persian desent who converted in the early days and remained stood fast along side of the Holy Prophet (saw) aganist all odds.
I haven't heard about him giving refuge ... maybe someone else knows better.
I am not too sure, but I think he was the sahabi who suggested digging the trench etc., in the Battle of the Trench (3rd important battle) to the Prophet and his followers.

treat whatever u hear about him with a grain of salt.. Majority compilers of hadith being of Persian origin, his persona has been embellished to the nth degree.
