Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

He was a brave man & stood for what was right. How sad that he was murdered by selfrighteous mad prick who is hailed by many as hero.

Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

“Many advised me not to take on the issue because my life would be threatened but it reminded me of a Faiz poem, ‘aaj bazaar meiN pa bajolaaN chalo,’” said an adamant Taseer in an interview with Arshad Sharif, two days before his death.

Salmaan Taseer must have known how dangerous it was to stand up against religious fanaticism in a country like Pakistan. He must have been told by his loved ones that criticizing something as sensitive as blasphemy laws would mean inviting death to yourself. He would have been warned by his party to tone down his campaign for the reformation in the blasphemy laws.

But he didn’t pay heed to the warnings. He said enough is enough.

“For how long are we going to live under the fear of such zealots?” he asked in a TV interview.

If it wasn’t for Taseer, who would have dared speak up?

Asia Bibi was a poor Christian woman from the district of Sheikhupura, who along with her husband worked in the fields to make her living. Always insulted by the Muslim women around her, she lost her temper one day and a scuffle broke out, which led to both sides calling names to each other.

While swearing at each other, the Muslim women derogated Asia’s religion, calling her ‘impure’ to which Asia responded equally.

The women alleged blasphemy and by the nightfall, Asia was arrested over blasphemy charges. She was sentenced to death in days to come.

Taseer, then Governor of Punjab, heard of it and investigated into the matter. Upon learning what actually happened, he went to Asia personally and helped her file a mercy petition.

As expected, tons of abuse, threats and protests welcomed him as clerics from all over the country got a product that sells the best: blasphemy allegation.

One such cleric was Hanif Qureshi. Provoking the masses in his fiery speeches, he is said to have inspired the killer of Taseer.

“We are the heirs of Ghazi Ilm-ud-Din Shaheed, we are those who love the spirit of Ghazi Abdur Rasheed. We announce it publicly that if death sentence is revoked from 295–C (blasphemy law), we know how to trigger a gun and behead the blasphemer,” Hanif Qureshi said in a speech.

There is a common belief that extremism is only limited to Salafis and Deobandis while Barelvis are mostly peaceful. Referring to this, Qureshi, a Barelvi himself, goes on to say, “Allah has honored us with strength and courage to strangle the blasphemer, to cut his tongue and to riddle his body with bullets.”

Taseer knew what was brewing yet he remained unyielding till the very end. In an interview with BBC Urdu, when asked about the fatwa against him, he bluntly said, “I am not going to give up to these illiterate people who even decreed a fatwa against Basant, Zulfiqar Bhutto and BB Shaheed. I don’t care about them.”

On 4 January 2011, five years from today, the sweltering speeches by Qureshi and other clerics bore fruit as Mumtaz Qadri, an Elite Force guard assigned to protect Taseer, killed him instead.

Five years on, a lot has changed. Mumtaz Qadri has been sentenced to death and Supreme Court recently rejected his mercy plea. Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, the head of the three-member SC bench, explicitly stated that calling for reforms in blasphemy laws didn’t amount to blasphemy itself.

While Qadri is to be hanged soon, the question remains about the steps that the government has taken to curb the ideology producing Qadris. Hanif Qureshi still roams around freely, appearing frequently on TV talk shows, posing to be a moderate cleric. There are people inside the government and state structure who are of the same ideology – the state is yet to take any action against them.

The most fitting tribute the government can give to Shaheed-e-insaniyat (martyr for humanity), is by releasing the poor Asia from jail. It will hold a great symbolic value for the oppressed and persecuted of the country.

I would like to dedicate this poem to the man who stood when no one else dared.

Har ik kadam azal thaa, har ik gaam zindagi
Hum ghoom-phir ke koocha-e-qaatil se aaye hain

Baad-e-khizaa ka shukr karo, Faiz, jiske haath
Naame kisi bahaar-shamaail se aaye hain

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

Very well written. Despite all the political differences with him, i think he was the most daring voice on definitely the most sensitive issue of our country. Putting his life, his family at stake he stood by his firm opinion of something that not only him, but his son also paid price of.
Whatever he did personally was upto him, we are no one to judge. But he was absolutely right in wutever he said about this case.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

Its just ironically sad how people like salman taseer and Malala are the ultimate victim of hatred while all the proven wrongs govern the minds and resources..

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

PPP is a party of brave people

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

AP uncle, your problem is that you think its like a syasi jalsa here where you as a political leader say wutever and we’ll believe that. Who was in government Jan 03rd 2011? Mumtaz Qadri could be hanged rightaway by a special presidential ordinance. Wut happened? Bilawal/Zardari should be ashamed of taking salman taseer’s name and also those who quote them.

Yes PPP was the party of braves when there were people taking lashes in Zia’s dictatorship but didnt bow down.
After that, it was taken over by crooks and cowards. Salman Taseer etc are only few exception

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

I am agree with you and already said about years of AAZ
But I hope it is back on track with The born leader , the only hope

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

“It doesn’t bother me. Who the hell are these illiterate maulvis to decide whether I’m a Muslim or not?” (Salmaan Taseer)

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

What is the difference between Mumtaz Qadri and Ilm Din who is also called Ghazi and Shaheed both in our history?

Our history is full of murderers being hailed as heroes. Nothing new.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

These blasphemy laws are so misused. A Christian teacher in my friends school barely escaped being burnt alive in her home because some teenage prick had written a derogatory poem about islam on her board. People who didn't even know the kalma became enraged at this, blamed the poor teacher and her house was mobbed. She had to go into hiding. It is a terrible situation.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

Pakistan is full of ignorance. Some serious mental condition people have.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

What nonsense. how do you respect any person that supported the thuggery of Benazir, was a servant to her thug husband Zardari???

Again, just because the man spoke against maulvies is just one part of the story. Can not ignore the rest of it. If he had spoken against the ‘haraam khors’ in his own party and perhaps got out of the party based on principles, he would actually get some respect.

I am all for vigilante justice getting meted out to all of the PPP jiayalas… anyone that looted this country and supported them - may they all burn in hell along with others like the ganja clan. Sooner we realize that maulvies, taliban, mqm, ppp, pml-n are all part of the problem and not the solution, the better.

Let them all kill each other - so the rest can live in peace.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

Sadly for you, in a democratic system, people have to prove guilt in a court of law. The reason we have such a justice system, is so that people like you and I are protected from false accusations. The problem with supporting vigilante "justice" is that if today its YOUR enemies who are executed, tomorrow it will be you... Now you could claim to be innocent, but the assassins bullet doesn't generally care what you think once it leaves the barrel.

Salman Taseer may or may not have looted, but no one deserves to die because some A-hole decided to take it upon himself to implement his own brand of "justice." Its ironic that you are incensed over the theft of state coffers, as it amounts to stealing from the people, but have so little respect for the basic of right to a trial, the lack of which would amount to stealing peoples basic human rights.

And even if we assume he was guilty of looting... He wasnt killed for that crime. He was killed for doing the right thing in this case. But lets say he was proven to have looted the country or supported people who looted the country... Where is that a crime punishable by death?!?! Corruption get you a prison term, but its only in the most backwards totalitarian states that people are executed.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

Fair trial and justice system is a joke in Pakistan - thanks mainly to those that have governed it so poorly.

Benazir and her PPP goons made mockery of it everyday. They had ample opportunities to fix things - instead they were busy looting. They kept the masses uneducated and backwards - explains why Larkana PPP hometown looks the way it does. This is the result. Uneducated masses joining Taliban. Yes, in a morbid way - while not the ideal way we like it - justice is being served.

PPP, MQM, PMLN have damaged this country more than Taliban foot soldiers. These a-holes have destroyed the country systematically and created this cesspool where they have become above the law. If the political leadership of these parties can be a target of Taliban and not the average Pakistani, then its two thumbs up from me. They deserve every bit of what is being dished out to them and more.

I only wish, Ganja and his haraam khor friends/family can get on the list and meet their makers soon. Ganja is in bed with Mullahs. We should hold him responsible for not taking action against Laal Masjid maulvies and others like him. All the talk he did after APS was just that - punjabi mosques still preaching hate. Ganja has blood on his hands of our children and his end (and that of his family's) wont be much different.

Re: Salmaan Taseer: The man who spoke amidst deafening silence

this.....

this is the reason why i lose hope sometimes that we can ever win this war against this cancer....ev ry one loved malala and respected her except millions in pakistan. and the educated lawyers were supporting that murderer mumtaz qadri
