Salat

I’m not sure if this has been brought up before but I would appreciate it if someone could tell me specifically what surahs we are suppose to read in each rakat of sunnat & fard salat for all Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, & Isha…I’ve asked around and so far I’ve been told I can read any Surah I want after Surah Fatiha. If this is true, can someone please tell me what Muhammad PBUH used to pray in salat so I can follow the hadith. Thanks

Re: Salat

Afridi786, Certainly you can say any surah after Surah Fatiah. Surah Ikhlaas (Qul-hu-wallah) is the most common and indeed very precious one, as it eqauls one-third of the Quran.

I learnt that once some Sahabi (RA) came to Prophet Muhammad :saw: and said about another sahabi (RA) who used to do imamat that he recites various surahs in the namaz but he recites Surah Ikhlas too in every rakat. It makes the prayer long. Aap :saw: asked that sahabi (RA) and he replied, Ya Rasul-Allah I am in love with surah Ikhlaas so much that I just cannot imagine my namaz without it. Prophet Muhammad :saw: upon listening this, said, go ahead and continue your practice, for Allah loves Surah Ikhlaas too.

The general rule is that you start small surahs in the first rakat and go onto bigger in the next rakat. Or if you remember the order in which those surah appear in Quran then follow that order.

I also learnt that Prophet Muhammad :saw: used to recite Surah Kafiroon in Fardh of Fajar and Asar.

Prophet Muhammad :saw:also used to recite surah A’la, Surah Kafiroon and Surah Ikhlaas in the first, second and third rakat of Vitar of Isha respectively. He also used to say Surah Takathur frequently. I’ll try to dig some more.

There are different school of thoughts, some say that repeating the smae surah in every namaz is a bid’a but other perfectly approve it. I personally try to recite the above mentioned surahs as I learnt our Rasul-allah used to do, out of love, everyday in those particular salats.

Now if you ask me about particular references to quote … hmmm… I’ll have to dig them for I can’t remember exactly where did I learn a particular thing. I keep searching and try to learn as much as I can, and it’s not always possible to remember references. In case, I found some, I’ll inshaAllah post it or PM you later on. Besides, there are mashaAllah more learned peopel on this forum who can guide you more.

Allah :swt: knows the best and may He guide us all, ameen.
