Salary Negotiation

Alright here is the deal.. i need advice kinda urgently…

I had a software developer interview with a company in Gatineau (near Ottawa)

Now they made an informal offer of $65,000 and asked me what i had in mind, to which i told them around $70,000

Now this hiring guy told me that he will get back to me with final offer once he gets it approved and stuff. So i just got an email and the offer is $60,000 (with 3% increase after 3 months)

When i saw that i was like what the hell! .. how can you go down in your offer when you are negotiating..

anyways. what do you think is an average pay for software developer in Canada? I am a recent graduate. Also what the heck should i reply to this guy???

thanks

Re: Salary Negotiation

Five grand here or there doesn't make a difference in the long run. If it s a good opportunity then go for it.

Re: Salary Negotiation

See i don't mind $60,000 either to start with but if he offered $65,000 then isn't it odd for me to lower my expectations?

I have emailed him asking to re-negotiate on $65,000 .. lets see what he says...

Re: Salary Negotiation

It is a little unusual. although not unheard of for a company to decrease the offer during negotiations. It was happening in I/T and consulting areas when the industry was hit big time, and even offers were being withdrawn or start dates delayed by months.

I think your approach should be thaty you tell them that you are willing to accept the initial offer of the company. and see what they say. as Fayz said 5k here and there does not matter, if the opportunity is good go for it.

from a salary perspective, what you are askign for, how does it compare to avg salary in your area for someone of your experience? have that info handy as you negotiate with any company. be ready to make a case of why you need to be on teh higher end of the band.

Re: Salary Negotiation

thanks Fraudia, I think i will accept the offer. Its a startup company and i think it will be great experience for me. $60,000 is an avg pay for recent graduate. So I think its not that bad..

btw if anyone else here knows someone who is looooking for a software developer than count moi in.. PM me and i will forward you my resume for review.. thnx :)

Re: Salary Negotiation

Congratulations on the offer Ansoon...

The original offer sounds like it wasn't only informal but casual. Although it’s rare to have someone quote a figure only to relegate later but it does happen – esp. with SMEs.

With a startup though, $60K is a decent starting salary these days. I’ve had some friends who’ve started at $55K’ish even with MNCs.

Also needed to touch base with you in Ottawa – I’m moving in over the next couple of weeks.

Re: Salary Negotiation

Re: Salary Negotiation

Congrats on your new job. Don't think about money when you are starting to build your career. Make a plan for your growth and actively works towards it. The day you find that your new job is not teaching you anything new and it is not letting you grow, it will be the right time to move. Once you have proven your skills and have solid experience under your belt, the money will come by itself and you will be able to demand much more $$$.

BTW, my first job out of college was 27K ... brings back memories :)
