Just to break the ice I told them I would work for a million dollars but I am flexible enough to accept going market rate for the position. They made me an offer I told them to make some adjustments they did and I accepted the adjusted offer.
Key is that they should understand that you are interested in the job at the right price but you are not desperate to accept whatever would be thrown at you.
