Salary Expectation for a New Job? Negotiate?

i have looked at websites like SalaryDOTcom to have an idea of how much salary my current position draws for a position i applied for in another state. how accurate is it? if the HR brings up salary, would it be okay to mention this figure based on the website?[let the HR know that this is based on so and so website]..or normally how much increase in your base salary would you expect when switching jobs: 15%? 20%? 25%? [if you have to move to another state]

the HR asked me my salary expectation in one of the earlier interviews and i did not give him a numer or a range but i think it will come up again in a later stage. or i might have to bring it up myself if i am offered something below my expectation.

i did not neogiate at all when i got my current job so i would like to be prepared for the next one..

i am in the engineering field [automotive industry] in amerika

Re: Salary Expectation for a New Job? Negotiate?

I think it largely depends on your expereience as well.. how many years of experience do you have in your field and based on that you can quote a comfortable number..

^yes..the website gives you the salary range[min, average, highest....] based on the experience for each position for example: 0-2 years, 2-4 years and so on..

and their source according to them is HR.

Re: Salary Expectation for a New Job? Negotiate?

heartbeat the site you mentioned can give u a good ball park estimate, but companies vary quite significantly in what ranges they have for a particular title, so u need to get a better idea of the scale. looking at vault.com may give you some insights, additionally, play the reverse game, ask them what the salary band is, and what determines if someone is at the lower mid or higher point on that band. go from there.

i was a member of vault for 3 months.. :--) it gave me a good insight about the company but the reviews didn't really help me that much for my salary expectation..

in my first interview i was asked about my salary expectation and i did try the reverse game and the HR responded by something like it will depend on the qualifications and blah blah..he did not give me a number either :---)

i am not sure if he will bring this up again and just make me an offer[if i get one..] and go on from there.......

Re: Salary Expectation for a New Job? Negotiate?

1 million dollars

Re: Salary Expectation for a New Job? Negotiate?

Just to break the ice I told them I would work for a million dollars but I am flexible enough to accept going market rate for the position. They made me an offer I told them to make some adjustments they did and I accepted the adjusted offer.
Key is that they should understand that you are interested in the job at the right price but you are not desperate to accept whatever would be thrown at you.

Re: Salary Expectation for a New Job? Negotiate?

^ See like I said 1 Million dollars.

depends on teh company I suppose. in my case i was able to find salary ranges for ppl in my target role so knew where they stacked up.

titles can be so misleading, even within business units within the same company at times.

:--) well, i think so far i have been quite clear that i am not desperate and would consider if the right position comes along. they know this is the only position i have applied for since i am not actively looking for a new position. during my first interview when asked, i told the HR that i was flexible....i am sure you guys are competitive

this process has been going on for about 5 months now!!!!!! and they have gotten back to me after every stage (not me). they have now scheduled a third interview for which i made them wait 2 weeks since i was busy. the HR asked if we can do it earlier and i offered that i am available over the weekend. :--)

yeah i think it does depend on the company. i agree titles can be misleading ...........

Kaleem, if it comes up again, i will mention 1 million dollars and post the outcome.................

so the interview went okay i think but the question of salary was not asked. however, the HR told me to submit the application asap..it sounded like it was more for the references....

i was wondering about filling out the 'salary history' information on the application..i am thinking of leaving it blank (where it asks for how much you currently make and your past salaries). if they need to know they can ask...anybody tried that?
