Sajdat al Shukr

Assalamo alaykum,

A few months ago, I learned that one should prostrate when happy or hears a good news as opposed to offering nifl salah for thankfullness.

I know it is very common amgonst many of us to offer nifl salaah for it. However, I haven’t yet found any evidence in the shariah for it. If anyone has any evidence for it, then please do share it, insha’Allah.

Here’s what I could find supporting prostrating when hearing a good news or when something good happens:

Source:Sajdat al-Shukr (Prostration of thankfulness)

I have read more on it in the past, but I can’t seem to find it.

In addition, nifl salaah can be offered for repentance. Again, there is evidence for it, which I can’t seem to find. It’d be good if someone can share it, insha’Allah.

Re: Sajdat al Shukr

Just one Sajdah?

Not like two and no salams...Just Sajdah?

Re: Sajdat al Shukr

^^ Yeah just one Sajdah and no salam as you may have seen many times during a cricket match a lot of time Pakistani players would perform a sajda after making a 100 (specially Salman Butt does it every time), or when Pakistan wins some special games (like winning the 92 world cup, Miandad and Mushtaq and few others did it).

Also often seen the Hockey players does it too after winning the match.

Re: Sajdat al Shukr

Lajawab, I usually offer one sajdah and no salaams. You know if something good happens or if all is well, I would go offer a sajdah. There could be more to it, but that's all I know so far.

Here's the confirmation of what I had said from Islamtoday.com:

This is the answer of Sheikh Abd al-Azîz b. Baz

I do not know of any prayer called a prayer of thanks. There are narrations about a prostration of thanks and about a prayer of repentance.

As for the prayer of repentance, it is preferred for a person who commits a sin to pray two units of prayer and make true repentance to Allah. This is called the repentance prayer.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whenever a servant commits a sin, then makes a proper wudû’ and prays two units of prayer and repents to Allah from that sin, Allah will accept his repentance” [Musnad Ahmad with authentic line of transmission].

If a person receives good news, such as the birth of a new baby or glad tidings of victory for the Muslims, then he may prostrate to Allah in thanks.

This prostration is similar to the one performed in prayer. In such a prostration one may say: Subhân Rabbî al-A`lâ , offer supplications, and praise Allah for the good news that he has received.

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) heard good news, he used to prostrate in gratitude to Allah. Abû Bakr also prostrated when he learned that the false prophet Musaylimah had been killed in battle. When `Ali found al-Mukhâddaj among the slain of the Khawârij, he prostrated to Allah.
