“Viva Chile” says Pakistani freed on bomb charges after US Embassy incident

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - A Pakistani man found with suspicious chemical residues inside the U.S. Embassy in Chile has been charged with possessing explosives.

A magistrate formally charged Mohammad Saif Ur Rehman Khan, but she also set him free from the high-security prison where he has been held all week since his detention at the embassy. Khan must stay in Chile and check in with authorities once a week while prosecutors have three more months to develop their case.

Khan’s defender Gabriel Carrion says the judge declined to charge him with associating with terrorists, for lack of evidence.

Khan was called in to the embassy after his name was put on the U.S. State Department’s terrorism watch list, according to diplomats in Washington.

Fruits of the fair legal system in Chile. They have all my admiration, I just wish people in Pakistan could develop a similarly secular, streamlined system of law ad governance.

If I compare this case with the detention case of this girl who was illegally detained in UAE about which I have posted on these forums, the UAE immigration had no plans to let her go. Probably they feared that she or her family would inform the international media so they had no plans to let her go. That is probably why we never hear about such cases of illegal detentions of Pakistani people because they never let them go ever or alive so that the world would ever know what goes on against Pakistanis in the arab countries. The family was somehow able to get hold of a very incluencial 'waasta' who assured the immigration authorities that this girl & her family were not the kind of people to get attention of media, that's how & why she was let go.

I agree with whoever above said muslim countries need to learn from the judiciary system of the west. If they do, more than half of their problems would be resolved just because of having a free & fair judiciary like in the west.

You posted alot of crap at the news of his arrest, along with some Indians who were having a field day, and some notorious MQMers here. Next time please wait for the judgments to be passed.

The pic of his worried parents back home in Islamabad was really sad. In these few days they must have gone through alot of pain and hardships, and being elderly thats not easy. I hope they are reunited with their son soon.

What does this mean (bolded part)? I still suspect that they will set some kind of trap. Mr Arkam, I am sure all of you and family have already advised him to stay away from any kind of nutcase, and if he is approached by a nutcase then he MUST report to authorities to stay away from any kind of entrapment IMO.

he isn't really set "free" what has happened here is that judge didn't find strong reasons to keep him detained under terrorism charges and hence has set him free while prosecutors will now focus on charging him with carrying explosives or whatever. His ordeal isn't over just yet but the govt would have really hard time trying to substantiate explosive charges against him and it would depend on what they found during the search of his apartment.

Although it is a big relief Alhamdulilah that he was not further detained under the terrorism act. However, we are still worried with the rest of the case since there is a charge on him.

Please pray to Allah that Saif returns home safely and sooner than later.

The Chilean interior minister seems to be adamant that he should not have been freed.

I wonder what is going on. There still is an accusation on him of explosive residue. So untrue and baseless!

To complicate the matters, my family has still not been granted the visa (as of 17th may ) to be with Saif.

Senator Alejandro Navarro ask the Attorney East that explained why the Police Intelligence Directorate of the Carabineros (Dipolcar) found no traces of explosives in the belongings of the young Pakistani Muhammad Saif Ur Rehman Khan (28), but so did the group Special Police Operations (BEPGs) of the institution.

According to the background that manages the senator, the first detection of traces of explosives allegedly made personal Intercom private enterprise, which provides security services to the U.S. embassy in controlling access to the legation.

MEETING WITH ATTORNEY
