Basically where one person has a romantic interest and the other doesn’t. The person that is not interested can be nice and let the other person know that they have no shot, or they take advantage of the love stricken fool. See this

i think it's a way of leading men on.

some women use these backup guys to fluff up their ego and still garner attention when theyre not getting it from whoever they want it from.
