Safe weight Gain

I’ve been underweight most of my life and it really gets to me when people call me skinny, anorexic, etc etc because I know I’m not.

Anyway do you guys have any suggestions/tips as to how I can gain weight in a healthy manner? I have tried everything and nothing seems to be working thus far.

Re: Safe weight Gain

eat each n everything for 3 to 5 months :p

Re: Safe weight Gain

Eat well, and eat healthy foods, and drink sufficient water.try eating more carbs, and more protein-rich foods.

Re: Safe weight Gain

Here is a very useful thread on this exact topic…its long but there are many useful tips in here. My son struggles with this issue and let me tell you, its SO much more difficult than the opposite - that of losing weight! Anyway, I think you’ll get some great info from this thread.

Re: Safe weight Gain

Are you trying to gain weight because people mock you for being skinny?
In any case, don't try to eat crap food for the sake of gaining weight. Some people are just lucky with good metabolism :) Just make sure to eat healthy portions, healthy food etc. You can be skinny with heart problems & cholesterol.

Re: Safe weight Gain

hey, i had the same problem. i think we don't anticipate how much one needs to eat to gain weight until it actually happens. we think we are eating enough/more but it's not nearly enough! i would say to increase your portion size gradually. i was used to eating a certain amount to be full so it was quite hard to get used to eating an increased amount. i also used to eat quite a small light lunch but now it's much more substantial. try and snack between meals on things like nuts. i used to have a bowl of cereal (the kind that's jam packed with nuts and stuff) for a snack so i was having 3-4 bowls a day. also, more carbs! just like losing weight, it's something you have to keep up with daily to see a real difference, eating some cake every few days won't make a difference!

Re: Safe weight Gain

:salam:

Banana with milk (grind it) is supposed to increase weight .

Re: Safe weight Gain

MO3 thanks for that link it was very useful! What have you tried doing for your boys thus far?

Sheen-i admit that it gets very frustrating when people call me certain things because of my weight and it gets me very upset as well because its not my fault my body is like this:-(

dedrops I heard the same thing..will give it a try

Darknight I can't see to do that no matter how hard I try...I get full so easily

My sister had the same problem, she wanted to gain weight. I told her to start taking my wpc/mpc's with a simple enough exercise routine, and she ended up gaining lean weight, she's pretty happy with the results. I'd type it out, but I'm too lazy to do so atm, so I'll type the basics out.

Eat wholemeal and lean stuff, don't go overboard on carbs, your body will convert extra carbs into fats. The way to do gain or lose weight successfully is by eating the right things, the right portions and exercising too (if u want to gain lean muscle weight and not fat)

Start by calculating how much kcals your body requires daily to maintain your current weight(RMR).

Find out your weight in lbs and multiply it by 11 and then by a factor of 1.2-1.3(if you do very light movement around the house), 1.4-1.5 (moderate movement) or 1.6-1.7(if you do a lot of movement, exercise etc).

So for example a person weighing 100lbs with moderate movement i.e walking, housework etc would require :

(100 x 11) x 1.4 = 1540kcals daily (RMR) to maintain their current weight

To gain weight, add 200-500kcals to the RMR

For your protein intake, its recomended to take 1.0-1.2g/lb of body weight.
fat intake : 20-25% of total intake
carbs : the rest, mainly wholesome stuff like oats, bran etc etc..

I duno if any of that is gona help :/ I remember trying to explain it to my sister but she didn't get it at all :/ so I ended up making her a plan. If you think any of the above is helpful and need more info, just reply back :/

Re: Safe weight Gain

well im skinny my self n i started that thread earlier to gain weight ..but no use im still skinny n will be getting married in dec n i hope um gona increase some weight after wedding :S

Re: Safe weight Gain

The thing is some people are like that, skinny. One can't do much about it. If all medical tests are good and you are active, energetic, healthy then I believe there is no problem.. but you might just never know, eating more might help.

lucky you are if you are skinny

please dont listen to people

Re: Safe weight Gain

My eldest son is the underweight guy...other 2 are thankfully healthy weight! We've done all kinds of things with him but the best two solutions are Carnation Instant Breakfast twice a day (mix a packet into 8 oz of whole milk, each drink is 280 calories) and also we mix one cup of Benecalorie into his morning oatmeal which adds 330 healthy calories and 7 grams of protein. You can get Benecalorie online at walgreens, its a great thing to put on some weight!

Re: Safe weight Gain

Check with your doctor sweety, he/she will help you......

Also, who cares what people say! You should gain weight if you feel uncomfortable with how you look, or you feel unhealthy etc, dont let others dictate how to live your life. Today they will tell you you're too thin, tomorrow they will tell you you're too fat!

Anyways, didnt you get married recently....give it some time, you will probably gain weight without any effort hehe :CareBear: I had a hard time gaining weight my whole life too and people would always tell me Im tooo skinny. After marriage I was easily able to gain an extra 10 lbs that I needed, so maybe you will too!

Re: Safe weight Gain

Thanks gals.
Well its been about 3 months since I got married and we live on our own now so khaana pakaana is tough since I am just learning how to cook on my own.
Abdelyukki thanks so much for that formula. I understand what you mean (I had to re-read it like 3 times lol)How long did it take her to gain weight?

MO3-does the Benecalorie have any taste to it?

ME- yes hun I went to the doc and alhamdullilah everything was fine. I hope to gain weight soon after marriage but so far no luck.

Re: Safe weight Gain

desigirl, the benecalorie does not have a taste but it is a little oily/pasty...it looks like flour/water, its white and pasty. You dont notice it at all though when you mix it into oatmeal, ice cream, mashed potatoes, cheese sauce, mayonnaise...things like that.

Also, something I just read yesterday is that Zinc supplement can increase appetite and weight gain! I plan to ask my sons doc about it for him. It may be one of those supplements that can cause ill effects if you take too much of it so I want to get the dose and safety info...but its a proven thing that zinc affects appetite and weight!

MO3 please let me know what the doc says about the zinc tablets :-)
As a future doctor, however, I am interested as to why your son is so thin and your 2 other boys are fine. Is he very active? Does he eat alot of junk food?
