Saddam Still Alive and in Iraq, Chalabi Says

DUBAI (Reuters) - Pro-American Iraqi politician Ahmad Chalabi said in remarks published on Monday he had credible information that ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and his two sons were still alive and in Iraq (news - web sites).

“Our sources confirm that he (Saddam) has actually not left Iraq,” Chalabi told the Arabic-language Asharq al-Awsat daily in an interview in Baghdad. "He is here with his sons but they don’t always travel together.

“I can’t tell you how I know, but Saddam is traveling with a special escort and his former aides have no idea where is or what he is doing,” he added.

Speculation about the whereabouts of Saddam and his two sons – Qusay and Uday – has swirled since the fall of Baghdad in April during the U.S.-led war on Iraq. Several senior aides of the deposed Iraqi leader are, however, in U.S. custody.

Last week, a close associate of Saddam was quoted as saying the former Iraqi leader was safe in Iraq and was preparing to organize resistance to the U.S.-led occupation forces.

On Saturday, another Arabic-language newspaper published a letter it attributed to Saddam in which he urged Iraqis to rise against the U.S. and British presence in Iraq.

In the six-page letter, which was faxed to the London-based Al Quds al-Arabi, Saddam also accused Iraq’s neighbors Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iran of facilitating his ouster. He also threatened to reveal damning secrets against them.

So far, the U.S. military has in custody 19 out of a list of 55 most-wanted Iraqis.

In the Asharq al-Awsat interview, Chalabi said the United States and his INC party’s Free Iraq Forces were hunting for the remaining Iraqi officials, adding he was confident that they would all be found soon.

A number of Iraqis on the most-wanted list have either been captured or surrendered to Chalabi’s forces.

“This won’t take a long time, I can assure you. I can’t say how long though,” he added.

hmmmm, so once again these CREDIBLE SOURCES are in. are these the same CREDIBLE SOURCES which gave evidence to RUMSFELD regarding WMD in iraQ? i mean comeon, making such stupid evidences in white house does not give them credibility. its laughable to read such rubbish whenever they mention the word credible.

in my view, since they haven’t been able to find / locate any WMD, so they are going back to their trump card, Saddam Hussain. this way they can tell people that he is still alive and you haven’t been fully liberated. so we’ll stick around to complete operation iraqi freedom.

who gonna believe this Jhalebi guy ? he is wanted in Jor-dan for bank fraud. Anyway he is only saying it so the Amer-icans will have an excuse to stay even longer in that country.

Chalabi is obviously sore that the American's have not yet picked him to be their stooge leader in Iraq, and his latest claims are no doubt an effort to "impress" them?

Chalabi should shut his mouth and return to Jordan first, prior to getting entangled in the sensitive domestic issues of other countries (i.e., Iraq). He should clear up his embezzlement allegations in Jordan in order to remove the stain from his name and image - rather than behave as a modern-day fugitive by evading that particular issue. How can a man who has allegedly embezzled a huge amount of money, be entrusted with any sort of privileged, respected position within a new government. Chalabi's better off staying put in the UK; the last thing Iraq needs is one more hypocrite added to the group.

:konfused: um weren’t we supposed to have captured this bloke by now, and put him in a cell at the Hague or something to face up to his atrocities? How long before we find this chap, or will we allow him to live out his life from some obscure cave like Osama bin Laden ?

Finding Saddam ‘still major objective’, BBC, 20 June 2003

The capture of ousted President Saddam Hussein and his sons is still America’s “major objective”, the chief US administrator in Iraq has said.

Speaking to the BBC, Paul Bremer said that it was important for the US and its coalition partners to find the former Iraqi leader to prevent hostile elements undermining reconstruction in the country.

His comments come as US newspapers report that US intelligence officials believe the Iraqi leader is still alive and in Iraq.

There probably was no Saddam is the first place.

:konfused: Still haven’t found him…however, the US did manage to injure five innocent Syrian border guards.

US offers $25m for Saddam capture, BBC, 3 July 2003

The military authorities in Iraq are offering a $25m reward for information leading to the capture of former president Saddam Hussein.
The top US official in Iraq, Paul Bremer, said $15m was being offered for similar information about Saddam’s two sons, Uday and Qusay.

I have certainly not forgotten Saddam Hussein and his sons,” Mr Bremer said in a message broadcast to the Iraqi people. ]
