Saddam reached deal with US before attack: Primakov

MOSCOW: Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein cut a deal with the United States before the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, former Russian prime minister Yevgeny Primakov said in an interview published on Thursday.

“There was an understanding with the Americans, as paradoxical as it may seem,” Primakov told the Russian daily Gazeta in a lengthy interview.

“Why weren’t the bridges of the Tigris blown up when the American tanks approached Baghdad? Why weren’t Iraqi aviation and tanks used, and where are they now?” asked Primakov, a former head of the Russian secret service and a specialist in Arab affairs who was formerly on good terms with Saddam.

“Why was there an immediate ceasefire? Why was there practically no resistance a year ago?” he added.

Primakov, who now heads Russia’s chamber of trade and industry, also cast doubt on the authenticity of footage of Saddam’s reported capture that circled the world on December 14.

**“They showed two soldiers with guns with palm trees in the background near the hole (where Saddam was reportedly hiding). At that time of year, date palms are never in bloom,” ** he said.

“Finally, any man can tell you that such a long beard (as Saddam had when he was reportedly caught) could not grow in seven months,” he said.

“All evidence suggests that Saddam surrendered earlier and the story of the hole was invented later,” he said. Primakov, who was also Russian foreign minister, made two secret trips to Iraq at the request of President Vladimir Putin, shortly before the invasion by US and British troops.

So that’s how America ‘won’ the war so ‘easily’.

I feel sorry for the Americans, they try and try so hard to be the heros and live that ‘American Dream’ but their lies are always exposed sooner or later.

I bet Saddam Hussain has moved in with President Bush and both men are having dinner together every day.

Ahh, that explains it. Russians are full of information as of late aren't they! Saddam agreed to look like a scared rat dropping while being pulled from a hole in the ground? I'm more impressed that the U.S. can make deals like that than I am with their ability to over throw a government militarily in a matter of weeks.

When did you start beleiving Russians. Or you beleive any one when it is in you favor.
Daily times lacks the information the Primakov is a former PM of Russia.

Help me understand as it seem to be two different things here. Is 7 months too long or too short a time for a beard of that size? And if he was caught earlier wouldn't the beard be shorter?

Faisal, what he is saying is that normally beard won't grow that long in 7 months..but since Americans had a deal with Saddam, they made it grow that long in 7 months what otherwise would have taken.....say may be 14 months...
I think he is prasing American efficiency and productivity.:)

^ Exactly. Part of the deal Saddam had with the US was to allow US forces to use an experimental hair growth hormone on him that would cause Saddam's beard and head hair to grow very quickly. Thus, it only took a matter of hours/days/weeks (pick one) for Saddam's hair to grow the length it normally would have taken more than 7 months to grow.

As proof of this theory, one need only to acknowledge that the US did not permit the press to photograph Saddam's back, underarms, or pubic region. Had those photos been taken, it would have been obvious that the hair growth was not of the natural variety but rather artificially induced. All of which makes one wonder why Saddam's eyebrows, nasal hair and that irritating stuff that grows out of your ears as you grow old did not stretch to the floor when he was "arrested." Hmm.... maybe there is something to this story.

You are ignoring another fact....all these experiments were done on Saddam on the behalf of Hair Loss and Treatment Industry of US....and you know who controls this industry?..you guessed right..Joos..who else.....as Paul Harvey would say...now you know the whole story.:)

Fact of the matter is when US invaded they faced non existent army.

They US is struggling to fight the resistance today in iraq more so than they did with so called iraq army and the much hyped revolutionary guards , in the entire carpet bombings and blowing up anything that moves during the 2003 invasion.

Definetly there was some kind of deal done only we have lack of solid evidence at the moment to say exactly what went on behind closed doors between iraq regime and US invaders.

As for saddam doing deals with the US thats nothing new, and come on his been there pet project for past 50 years.
