well it depends from person to person.
I feel sad even when a random stranger does something bad. May be I feel sad for the stranger in that case, and not necessarily for my ownself.
When a person whom you trust cause you sadness, the sadness is all yours and you don't share it with the person at all :(

Another aspect is that one envy when he/she compare oneself to others. Becoming sad in that case is rarely seen.

Nothing is more burdensome than expectations. Problem with people is that once you are connected with others, you automatically start different kind of things from them and when things do not come out the way you want, one gets sad.
