Sad reality of Corporate America!

There is a part of that feels really bad but I have to do this.

Recently one of the older representatives was let go and things did drop on my poor fragile shoulders. They hired a new girl and as i learned few things from Corporate America in past few years etc. I am not going to be teaching her anything.

I feel horrible doing this but I have to.

I am not going to teach anyone who is junior from me anything unless I am asked to. They did expect me to learn everything but I wont teach the art to another person. Ethically I know its wrong this should not happen but hey. If I teach someone else how to do the job what am I good for then!they will find someone who they can pay less and move on.

It’s sad but reality. The moment they can find someone who they can pay less and get the same work done you are out of the game

I guess time will make me get over this stupid thing.

Me?

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

I don't agree.
Don't look down. Look up.
Always focus on improving your own skills so that you consistently add value to the organization that you are a part of. If you stagnate, then you will become a dinosaur anyway.
Teaching those junior to you will not eliminate your position unless you cease to improve yourself.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

I agree with Muzna.
You don't have to go out of your way to help other but do help if you can. The fear of losing your job by helping someone learn shows insecurity in your own skills. It means you are underachieving and even a junior can do your job. Shouldn't you be improving yourself instead of getting worried?

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

Adding on to the last two replies, its also more a function of how your organization is growing. In my line of work, I am always looking to teach new folks the stuff I know because there is just so much work, I can't do it all myself. I'd much rather review their work, than do it myself. And thats because the work just keeps on adding up with new business coming in all the time, and I'd rather move to more complex issues than what a junior person can handle. If your organization is not growing then you probably need a better representative of Corporate America.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

Thing is, if you horde information, you are not going to be an effective leader, in any case. You gain knowledge by sharing it. Some of my best learning is when I am teaching a topic, either formally or informally. And there you add more value to the organization as well.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

Not only does it add value to the organization, it shows that you are a team player and willing to do whatever is required to move the team forward.

My management style was always one of empowerment. Give the team what they need.....be it knowledge or tools, and always be there to facilitate their progress.

If I see that there is a member on the team that is less willing to share and less likely to help another team member, then I see that person as unco-operative and I am less likely to encourage promotion for that person.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

There is no "I" in team Nia!

I don't work in an office environment, I never have done, so excuse the following questions. How does helping somebody new effect your position or career? Would it not increase your own skills and would you not in the process also learn a new skill? Isn't being a team player more important that your ego, or is it a case of " I should be the only person who knows how to do my job?" I don't understand. Even if it was everyman/woman for themselves, your working as part of an organisation, a team, everybody works together don't they?

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

I agree with Muzna, Fayz, and Faisal. :k:

At the end of the day you’d be bogged with miniscule tasks, which you could’ve easily passed on to others and could’ve used the extra time to concentrate on tasks that require your expertise and attention.

Keep yourself abreast with the latest in your field and you’ll do just fine.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

teach her other things that corporate america wont frown upon... teach her naughty things ..MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMMmmm

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

how long before she figures out the deep dark secrets of the coffee maker on her own.. do you have a severence package negotiated yet?

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

queer you know your face is getting burned soon right!

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

As the saying goes, 'you can't be promoted if you can't be replaced'.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!

You know the place where i work at , everyone works in teams. The only way you can move up is if you can work well in that team. If you dont share , you cannot work in a team. The company might be considered as "evil" by some. But employees are treated the best possible way.

Re: Sad reality of Corporate America!
