I think faith is above these things, but like you mentioned many places have not been reserved and hence lost due to neglect.

Like who for example ? Rama, Krishna, Ayodhya, Dwaraka, Buddha, Bodh Gaya, Christ ,Jerusalem, Mohammed, Mecca. These places certainly exist but as for the divinity of the people mentioned, I suppose it is a matter of faith.
