“Tendulkar will fill one of 12 seats in the Rajya Sabha that are reserved for those persons “having special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service.” Tendulkar is the first sportsman to be nominated in this category, which has no election process.”
How stupid is this? What is the point of having non-political MPs?
Sachin is a cricketing great but he has never shown enough balls to take any stand. He was not a good captain. He cannot be verbally confrontational or argumentative when required. What value can he had to politics?

Is this just a political move?
That is true. May be they want him to enjoy the luxuries of an MP but use his knowledge skills to develop special programs and have someone else to carry out his ideas/suggestions etc
Does this system of nominating nonpolitical celebrities into the parliament exist in any other country? I'm lazy to do the research to find the rationale behind it.
I think these rich celebrities should just either donate money to the poor, or have their own charity foundations. A lot of them already do this, including Sachin. That should be their contribution to society. I just don't see them getting anything substantial done in parliaments.. especially our desi corrupt highly politicized yet inefficient parliaments.
Since when the great party liked the people with leadership quality, is our PM or President are leader of masses??
Dada should have been the real choice:k: but he can become more famous than Sonia and Rahul like APJ was:). Sachin is best suited to them like our PM and President:D
Seriously I would prefer not having anybody directly nominated to these positions. I would rather have them fight elections and win the seats to the parliament. Look at Nandan Nilekani a very good CEO but when it came to politics he is just not cut for it. He is heading a very g*****ose scheme which nobody talks about these days. If Nandan could not make the cut, I seriously doubt if Sachin can make it.
I believe this would mainly be an honorary title. Sachin won’t necessarily be involving himself in policy matters. He could use his star status to promote development (schools, hospitals etc.) in the more deprived areas of India
Just because someone is a quiet Individual doesn’t necessarily mean they cannot hold a sensible opinion on issues related to society
In Britain they have unelected peers (many of them party donors) appointed to the House of Lords (= Senate or Upper House of Parliament) by the Queen on the advice of the PM. Peers could be anyone (entrepreneurs, sportsmen, mediamen, ex-judges or armed services personnel, clergy, doctors)
But as opposed to most other countries where Senate is the superior body, in Britain, The House of Lords does not have indefinite overriding powers over The House of Commons (The Lower House of Parliament)
**
"**The House of Lords is not dissolvable by the Queen and is completely unelected. Its members are a mixture of hereditary peers/Royal Family (92, or 13%), life peers (about 670, or 85%), law lords and Bishops and Archbishops of the Church of England.
The Government is not dependent upon the support of the Lords for its survival, and **the Lords has only the power to delay legislation originating in the Commons for a maximum of 13 months (one session plus one month). After that, if the same Bill is reintroduced and passed by the Commons again, then the Lords is overridden."

he is being appointed to the rajya sabha, not the lok sabha.
I get that. It's still a political position is it not?
It is not supposed to be a political position according to the constitution. But the constitution says a lot of things :) say that governors should be impartial and all that. Successive governments have used this bait to entice bigwigs to get political mileage
**This would apply to most politicians in both countries **… no offence but *95% ko dekh kar sharam aati hai k kaise kaise unparh ganwar log parliamentarians baney bethey hain!!
*Charity work is social service, NO!
As for
Sachin didn’t much like science at school but he did enjoy arts subjects incl. Hindi literature!
If Sachin can do more of such work as a result of his new position then good for him

While I agree with you, I think becoming a politician requires some skills which we do not have. Best of business leaders have become the worst political leaders. Not to repeat myself, Nandan Nilekani the former CEO of Infosys is struggling with a g****ose project. Even though the position is non-political it is everybody's knowledge that he is struggling. While it is easy to belittle politicians, we would have to agree that not everybody can become a true political leader.
Coming back to the topic, Sachin is going to be a pawn to be used by the Congress. Sachin transcends all parties. Initially people would respect him *. But then it would only be a matter of time before he is subjected to criticism. I am not sure if Sachin handles criticism very well. For God's sake he was not even good as a captain. He did not have the capability to marshall his eleven team members.

Hence I prefer a system something like they have in the United States ((not ideal but better (less corrupt) than parliamentary system of government IMO)) where the federal cabinet is solidly composed of parey likhey technocrats (specialists in their respective fields) and some politicians
My biggest problem with party-based (parliamentary) politics is that in the name of party discipline, one often has to tell blatant lies to the public and hide the real facts. This is just unacceptable to me
