Sabians

There is reference to the Sabians in the Quran multiple times. Who were they? I guess it’s a group that is now extinct.

Re: Sabians

Peace PCG,

The word "Sabian" incurred in Holy Qur'an at verse 62 of Surah Al Baqarah, verse 69 of Surah Al Ma'aida and verse 17 of Surah Al Hajj and Almighty Allah knows best whether they exist or not. Scholars have different of opinions over 'Sabian' that who were they are.

Re: Sabians

Peace sister PCG

The Sabioon are thus named as people of Saba ... Saba = Sheba ... The Queen of Sheba is known to have ruled over a territory in current day Yemen and some neighbouring areas. Yemen territory was one of the first to intermarry Muslims from the north and were already mostly under the rule of the Medinan Islamic state during the life of RasoolAllah (SAW) ... I think it is incredibly unlikely that there are Sabioon around today ...

Re: Sabians

So these were basically the ancestors of the Yemen people?

Re: Sabians

Quran refers to them as a separate monotheistic entity. Ex. "The Sabians and the Christians", as I read it in a verse a few days ago.

So these were a separate community at the time with their own religion, I would think?

Re: Sabians

This is just interesting. I just wish we knew more about them.

Re: Sabians

Other than that opinion that they were the people of Sheba ... There are other possibilities. They could be what the Bible and Apocrypha refer to as the Samaritans, Ebionites and Essenes. Some of these groups were either non-rabbinic Jews or converted people in to the Jewish law.

There are many groups of people throughout history who have been monotheistic with an Abrahamic or Noahdic identity. Sabi'un could also be a group name for these people.
