As of 25 March 2003, Health Canada has received reports of 19 cases who have become ill with SARS in Ontario and British Columbia. There have been three deaths in Canada. All Canadian cases have occurred in persons who have traveled to Asia or had contact with SARS cases in the household or in a health-care setting.

Ontario: 18 total cases
To date, all cases have occurred in close family contacts of travellers returning from Hong Kong or in health care workers who have cared for these cases.

yesterday i heard that they managed to identify which virus was causing this.......it will make it easier to diagnose and treat patients

Yeah, I heard it on the news that it's getting really bad in Toronto, and that a lot of people have to be quarantined. Take good care ya'all..

Sars

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is the latest disease to scare the world. No treatment tested against SARS had been effective so far. It spreads like the flu. I have heard that 4 people in Canada have died so far from this disease. (can anyone confirm this?) Any stats on how many are effected by SARS in the USA?

Aisha you are right, the fourth person died of SARS today. It has mostly affected the East Coast of Canada. There have been less than ten cases reported here in Vancouver; almost all who have visited Hong Kong. It's kind of troublesome considering the fact that between 30%- 40% percent of Vancouver's total population originates from Hongkong/China, and the city happens to be a major gateway for Far Eastern countries.

Sporadic scares are starting to happen across the U.S. in San Jose a jet has been quarantine with the fear that 4 people aboard may have it. Seems to be spreading fast across the world.

6 ppl dead in Canada now. It's really starting to hit home as people around us are getting infected, a 4th year med student at U of T came down with it, a professor at Ryerson was put under quarantine.

I was reading in the Star the other day about the flu epidemic in 1918 that killed at least 20 million people worldwide, that was 1.1% of the total population then. Do the math and 1.1% of the total population today is a mindboggling number.. about 63 million I think. And considering our ability for global travel today, one cringes to think how that would effect the spread of the disease.

Don't forget to put on a mask where there are a lot of people around :) One just has to cautious. It would be dreadful if it becomes an epidemic, and the way it's getting around is pretty serious; like something sort of an airborne virus.

Man, this is serious stuff. Take good care of yourself. ALL of you.

I think this thread should be made an important in all forums coz it is spreading like fire. I heard just an hour ago that a lot of people in the US are affected now.

It is very bad especially for Torontonians like me, six people have died and it spreads like a cold. IT came from China and the air traffic there and back has dropped. Apparently, it is a variation of the common cold.

travelling amongst thousands wearing a mask while others don't hmm... they'd think ur under quarantine running amuck and you may have it but then again its better to be safe than sorry.

another thing i've noticed in public while travelling on transit is the orientals covering their mouths more so with whatever they have. ironic ain't it.

So what kinda masks are we talking about here and where are they available for the general public?

It makes you think after Walkerton's polluted water incident how the government tried to hide it, it spilled out and then the preventative measures came into place.

For S A R S i wonder what the government is holding back, preventative vaccines?

now this is freaking me out....I'm gonna becoming for further education to Ryerson in August...shld I?

Cooldude: now you don't have to panic. you are as much at risk as someone sitting in a bus with 2 people. The chance of getting SARS are low. Watch CBC news to keep an update on SARS its not as bad as you would think.

I go to Ryerson, don't worry bout it. one of my group members was in contact with another who was infected and now under quarantine. Luckily, none of us were in contact with him so we're safe. Alhamdullilah. Preventative measures are being taken.

Khair if we have to die, we'll die, there is no stopping it. Angel of death is just doing a bang up job on taking on the human population by the masses.

Wash your hands, eyes and mouth thoroughly for three minutes each time before eating.

A personal space distance (this is only me) should be atleast 2 feet apart when talking to someone.

Avoid the above mentioned places in the initial post.

and... Cleanliness is the key to healthiness.

I heard there was a seventh death a couple of days ago?

Oks I read some where on the net that anti-influenza drug prevents from getting the disease. How far is that true??? If its true then which drug is that? Also one of the doc’s said that anti-influenze drug has effect only if u get a shot before the spring season. Is thhat true or not?

Its so amazing that i went to a doc to get information about the disease and the doc had no idea about it. It was like she has never heard of it  and she was asking questions like “do u get snezes” anyways am not ready to waste more money befoe i know exactly what I am looking for. So share whatever info you ppl have abt the prevention drug :stuck_out_tongue:

Take care and stay good :stuck_out_tongue:

There is no vaccine for this SARS....I guess not even prevention drugs.....

7 deaths hsere in australia too .. what da hell is this virus neway i mean like what are da symptoms and what does it do :konfused: every asian passenger who comes here is quarantined in the airport.

One of my pals at UT med told me that their classes have been cancelled indefinitely due to SARS cases in the hospital. the ironic thing is all the students are now travelling here and there..so..if they were exposed to the virus..they are taking it with them everywhere they go.

It's arrived in the UK as well. A couple of cases in Scotland, and there was another one somewhere who brought it back from some far-eastern country.
