Russian missiles found in ETA arms caches: Spain06-10-2004
MADRID: French police have found two Russian-made surface-to-air missiles among huge arms caches uncovered during a sweep against Basque separatist group ETA in southwestern France, officials said on Tuesday. French police sources said they were SAM-7 missiles that can be used to bring down helicopters or low-flying aircraft.
Back to the subject, we all know that the Chechens are heavily militarily and financially supported by the West because that size of Russia frightens Europe, especially the Europeans. I'm sure Russians will be thinking of creating violent atmospheres in the West also as a retalliation!
I hate to throw a splash of cold water on another good conspiracy theory. But, is there any evidence that these SAM 7 missiles were sold to the ETA anytime in the recent past? Is there any evidence to suggest that the Russian government even sold these missiles to the ETA as opposed to the ETA acquiring them on the black market? Al Qaeda weapons caches include Stinger missiles which were provided to the mujahadeen in the 1980s. Thus, finding a Stinger in an Al Qaeda weapons cache today would not be evidence of any current effort to spark violence.
Apparently, surface to air missiles are not all that difficult to acquire by terrorists and they pose a real risk to civilian aircraft.
SA-7s are the single most widely proliferated surface to air missiles in the world, and can be pretty easily obtained from half the countries on the planet - there are 50,000 of them spread all over the world.
It's like suggesting that since heroic Hezbollah fighters have been photographed wielding M-16s, an American gun, that means they are being supported by the USA.
So everyone thinks that Russia wants peace in Western Europe and in noway at all, the Russians hold any Europeans responsible for supporting the Chechens.
Maybe someone can tell me why when I was reading the Financial Times last week, pages were full of West condemning the death of democracy in Russia and at the same the Eastern Europe block is scared stiff, fearing an imminent Russian 'pre-emptive strike'?
Mad S: When it comes to weapons systems and the like, you’re always a wealth of info. Thanks. That’s what I sort of thought but I wasn’t sure if the SAM 7 was some newer version only recently manufactured.
Green: I don’t think many people are fearful of a Russian pre-emptive strike against Europe. Russia blames Islamo-fascist terrorist thugs for fomenting and aiding the Chechens not Europe. The war on these terrorists has many battlefields. You’re right that the West has been condemning recent governmental restructuring that endangers and reverses the democratic tide in Russia. That’s not the same thing as fearing the return of a militaristic, repressive colonial empire. Russia has a lot more internal things to sort out before they could even consider trying to subjugate and then support Germany, Poland, Austria, et al.
