MOSCOW: Russia on Sunday launched its first new generation nuclear submarine since the fall of the Soviet Union as the Kremlin seeks to upgrade its undersea nuclear strike force.

The long delayed Yuri Dolgoruky, the first Borei-class (Arctic Wind) nuclear submarine, was moved to the dry docks at a highly secret submarine base in the Arctic town of Severodvinsk, the heart of Russia’s northern submarine fleet. ..

“For the first time in 17 years we are launching such a vessel -in essence this is the first Russian strategic submarine, a submarine of the new generation,” Ivanov said, the RIA news agency reported. …

Russia’s new super-quiet submarine will be equipped with Bulava-M ballistic missiles, which have misfired in several recent tests. They have a range of 8,000 km (5,000 miles). reuters

Re: Russia launches new generation N-submarine

Russia is unable to sustain such a great status with such a weak economy. What makes such a task even more difficult is that Russia is tied between two rising powers - EU and China - which have massively strong economies, are big trading partners of Russia, and have strong militaries (with China's expanding rapidly). Russian economy is no where close to either of these 2 powers, and thats the main reasons why Russia is willing to sell almost any military product to China. The quality of Russian defence products & weapons is superior to the Chinese right now, however their economy is weak, and they know that the rapidly expanding China will surpass them sooner or later. Hence, the Russians are willing to sell almost anything to make some quick bucks. In my opinion, its China's turn, and Russia can only tag along, with either EU or China, or both.
