Rushdie will discuss his new work, Shalimar the Clown.

Salman Rushdie is to take part in this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival after a 20-year absence.
Organisers of the world’s largest literary festival said they were overjoyed to welcome Rushdie back to Edinburgh and would take whatever steps necessary to protect the author, who was subjected to death threats over his book the Satanic Verses.

Rushdie will appear alongside other literary heavyweights such as Margaret Atwood, Dario Fo, Doris Lessing, John Irving and Andre Brink. They are among 500 writers who will take part in this year’s festival, which runs from August 13 to 29.

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

wow. Interesting. I personally havent read his book so i would refrain from making any judgements. Any guppies here who read the book could you tell us how was the book. Did rushdie deserve the treatment that he got?

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

yes. the book is awful. couldn't get past page 2 to find out if the book was offensive.

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

I don’t know which is sillier about that response… that he deserved a death sentence because his book was awful or that you can judge a book as awful before finishing 2 pages.

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

Good to see such ridiculous judgment comes from a mod, you’re well qualified Ma Mooli.

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

^ it is redundant for Ma Moolu

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

well his writing style sucked but he still won acclaim for writing a load a bull and not to mention managing to offend muslims worldwide. how does that one work out?

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

Writing style is open to one's taste, isn't it?

I suppose the death threats made the book more famous than it would have been...

Re: Rushdie returns to festival life

sem; dunn take it so literally, we’re not in world no more.

utd; as if i dinn know already, of course am well qualified. :halo:

aisha: i agree, and so is one’s opinion.
