Inzamam calls for consistency in selection amid Sohail’s resignation rumours](http://www.jang-group.com/thenews/nov2003-daily/29-11-2003/sports/s1.htm)
Rumors were rife on Friday in Lahore that the chief selector Aamer Sohail had given his resignation to the Board after another blunt reminder from Inzamam-ul-Haq and Javed Miandad that they were not in agreement with the policies of the national selection committee.
Sohail denied he had resigned through a board official but keeping in mind past incidents when the truth has come out later after initial denials from the Board, one has to give some credibility to these rumors.
As it is the indications were there in the afternoon that Sohail would not be happy with their remarks on the selection policies when the Pakistan captain and coach addressed a press conference.
It became obvious from the beginning today that Inzamam was not going to leave the chief selector a happy man with his comments on the selection policy.
Inzamam declared that as far as he was concerned the rebuilding process in the Pakistan team that started after the World Cup was complete and now there had to be more consistency in the selection of the team.
“We need to be more consistent in selecting players. I think we have tried out enough newcomers and the ones who are in the team now need to be given a proper chance and confidence,” he said.
“If they don’t perform, fine, you can replace them and try others. But I think now we have to stop chopping and changing players. That process is over and we now have to also start winning matches and build a nucleus in the Pakistan team for the future,” he added.
And it is clearly no coincidence that the recent differences between the team captain and coach with chief selector have not been limited to the question of authority and say in selection matters but also on Sohail’s insistence on chopping and changing players at will.
Inzamam also conceded that the change in his thinking could have come about because Pakistan was going to play against India in the next few months. “We have some tough series ahead of us and we need to now buckle down and find a dependable combination,” he stated.
