My MIL was telling me that in Islam - you cannot get married to someone you had pre marital relations with. You have to get married to someone else - get a divorce and then you allowed to get married.

1. Is that true?
2. What is the logic behind that rule?
3. Is there are punishment like 40 whips - or something?
4. What if you carrying ther person’s child

• P.S I am in none of these situations - just wanted to increase my knowledge.

I heard the EXACT SAME THING before and read it online too. I have to dig that up again though, I was befuddled by it too.
