Yes, England is the current champions.
Re: Rugby World Cup
Yeh, I think they should make a bigger deal of 7's in school. Only problem is that, where rugby normally have a position for any person big or slow or small or fat, 7's in a way cut the versatality factor.
Among all the sports, I believe rugby cater for all types of physiques. One reason being the set pieces such as scrums and lineouts. Locks and props can play soccer and few small scrumhalfs will be able to play grid-iron.
Myself played rugby till my second year out of high-school when I had a bad injury and stopped.
Your comment about the 4 home leaques: how big is N-Zeeland for that matter....and for years under Apartheid, South Africa only had 10% of the country making up the Springbok squad.
I believe it is the amount of passion and success and available money and good administration that drives youngsters to take up the game.
well 7's u have to be very versatile, players who would make it in regular union/league teams will not have a chance in 7's. I played Union and League rules both, and only started 7's during business school and played for a couple of years. To me from a physical aspect, 7s is by far the toughest game out there. I was playing league soccer as well as indoor soccer then as well and it was kinda funny how the skills from each sport complimented each other well.
Re: Rugby World Cup
and I agree that passion is a huge thing, as well as talent, work ethic and the ability to work as a team, sadly in england, whether its rugby or football, ppl think u throw in some superstars together and they will play well without any real effort to get the team to play as a team. kinda like Italian footie team for years..all superstars but no team cohesion, thats what I see in england's teams
Re: Rugby World Cup
I think its about time, the Asian subcontinent started playing rugby, then it really would be a world cup.
Re: Rugby World Cup
Abysmal, the subcontinent IS playing rugby. It just might not get big attention. Japan is representing the subcontinent in this World Cup.
Japan drew with Canada 12-12. Go Japaaan!!!
Feel sorry for the USA this weekend when the Springboks A-team takes them on and have something to prove. Might be a huge score. Ironically there is three (I believe) USA players who was born and raised in South Africa.
Go Tonga! Show England the door out of the World Cup!
Re: Rugby World Cup
Pakistan and India play Rugby aswell. ![]()
Re: Rugby World Cup
you know what is bad, when you see some powerhouses against newbie teams
aus- jpn for example 91-3
nz-por 108-13
we have seen some blowouts for established teams like england, italy, samoa and scotland
but u do see a big diff in class of the teams playing..i wonder what goes thru namibian players heads before and after each match
Re: Rugby World Cup

I believe it is a great experience for small teams to have the opportunity to rub shoulders with the "powerhouses". Their players get the chance to show what they have and many might be scouted by top professional club teams. They also learn a lot from the professional players and teams.
Normally the weaker teams will NEVER get a chance against, for them, their hero's. In the early 1900's, South Africa and other teams beat France, then a newbie, with huge scores. The same happened to Italy and Romenia. All have improved.
What I would like to see, is for the organisers to change the format somewhat by adding a second competition within the present one.
Increase the teams to 24 with 6 in a group each playing each other once with the two top teams progressing to the quarter, semi and finals of the Cup a week apart. All other teams to play in new 4 groups of 4 each against each other with the top 2 going into a quarter, semi, and final for a Shield. These games can be played 2 a week so that the Shield competition also ends with the Cup final. In fact, some of the Shield games might be curtain raisers for the Cup games.
Above will give the weaker teams more playing chance against less strong opposition in a major event promoting the sport at home. Even in this Shield competition there might be fairly strong teams such as Samoa, Italy, Ireland, Tonga, etc.

I had no idea, thats really good to hear.
Maybe next world cup we can beat the Kiwis!
Re: Rugby World Cup
Big match tomorrow, England-France. It will be a close contest but from what I have seen, france will win it.
Cup will go to NZ or Aus, they are far superior to other teams.

England did good.
Tonga is proof why these minor nations should be in World Cup. In 99 they lost 101-10 to England, in 2003 they lost 91-7 to NZ and this World Cup they pushed South Africa till the last moment and had England sweating the first 60 minutes.

i think rugby is one of those sports where these new teams can make an impact.
as they say footbal is a game of gentlemen played by hooligans, and rugby is a game of hooligans played by gentlemen.
rugby has never been as politicised as cricket or football, and frankly that has been good for teh sport and fair to the new entrants
