RSI

My friend from school have this RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury) to his arms. Being programmers we spend a lot of time typing at work and home. Lack of exercise is definitely a huge factor. Anyways he saw doctors, changed his key board and mouse, changed sitting posture/chair, took medicine and massages. But he is not getting rid of pain. I think eventually he might have to opt for sugary.

But till than do you guys have any Desi remedies that can help him ease the pain ?

I’ll really appreciate all your kind help.

Re: RSI

Unless he has Carpel Tunnel Syndrome surgery wont help. What he needs is a 2-3 week break from all typing.

Re: RSI

I also had to endure those grueling years in school taking programming classes, where sometimes I’d have to pull up an all night at the computer lab coding and debugging at the university den. I noticed that the labs at school were very ergonomic, the keyboards, the colors (they had a green pot around most computers as they say that looking at green stuff relaxes your eye muscles. You ahve to be extra careful with your arms, do a little exercise after every 2 hours, move them around. Take little breaks, walk around your cubicles or offices (go talk to the HR chicks if you have to :hehe:). Also, if you have CRT monitors, you should ask your supervisors to replace them with new flat screens.

I am not sure if he has CTS or not but I did tell him to take a break. But I think in these days of economic crisis no one is willing to take off from work

Yaar his company has provided him with all the high end equipment that can help him in any way. He is such a geek that I think he loves his C code more than any girl out there :cb: . I have also seen him playing games all the time and his concentration level is so high that he doesn’t even blink his eyes and move his hand from the position they are in. I told him dozens of time to do some exercise. But he is a pure turkish. Just likes to eat Kaboobz and sit

Re: RSI

I’ve had this before, and the doctor called it ‘tennis elbow’ but it kept reoccuring and he said it was RSI (must be all the notes I make in lectures:cb:)

Tell him to ease off a little from prolonged streetches of siting in front of the computer, rest his arms every now and when he has the chance to very light stretches/arm movements. Taking ibruprofen helped me a lot. I used to cry I was in that much pain.

I was suffering from wrist and hand pains a lot. Tried massages which helped and then started wearing a wrist supporter (which has a metal in it) because I was using the mouse a lot - and that helped a lot. Then my company introduced a lot of ergonomic office furniture including chairs, low tables, keyboards, palm rests and mouses a few years back.

The ergonomic keyboard takes a while to get used to and you need to be a competent touch-typist. Some companies offer a quick course on how to use it. I took that course and learnt it in 2-3 days. It reduces tension in hand/ wrist and I haven't had any pains in my fingers or hands since using one.

Make sure the keyboard and mouse are low enough so that you are comfortable and don't have to keep moving your arms and elbows. We get advised to walk around as well and have a stretch often by wiggling our hands, fingers, shoulders, legs etc. Rotate both hands to the left (x3) and then to the right (x3) and then do the same for feet etc. Massages help as well.

If the RSI is becoming really serious, talk to your supervisor or someone who can help. :)

Thanks dildirani and iggle for you comments. I’ll pass them on :k:
