European Champions League - Bayern Munich v Manchester United****Venue: Allianz Arena Date: Tuesday, 30 March 2010 Kick-off: 1945 BSTCoverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, Sky Sports
**Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand have been declared fit for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at Bayern Munich.**The England internationals missed Saturday’s 4-0 win at Bolton, striker Rooney with a foot injury and defender Ferdinand because of a groin problem.
But they were among the United party that checked in at Manchester Airport.
Ex-Chelsea star Arjen Robben is a doubt for Bayern after he injured his calf in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by VfB Stuttgart.
Robben pulled up late in the game after coming on as a second-half substitute.
“Maybe it will turn out not to be that bad but it looks difficult for the United match,” said coach Louis Van Gaal.
The Dutchman has been a key figure for Bayern since joining the club from Real Madrid in the summer and in midweek scored an extra-time winner against Schalke 04 in midweek to send Bayern through to the German Cup final.
Bayern are in the running for three trophies, including the Bundesliga, and have a busy schedule in the coming two weeks.
Our European record in recent times has been good and if we play to the best of our ability we really fancy ourselves
For United winger Ryan Giggs, the meeting with Bayern brings back memories of his side’s memorable comeback in the 1999 Champions League final, when they hit back to win 2-1 as part of their Treble that season.
“I can’t believe it’s 11 years ago,” said the 36-year-old Welshman.
"It was one of the greatest nights of my life and for many fans too. This will bring back a lot of happy memories.
“We will settle for the same score as in 1999 too but hopefully not leaving it as late as we did then.”
Surprisingly, that night in Barcelona remains the only time in seven encounters United have beaten the German side.
“I am a little bit surprised about our overall record but it has always been tight,” he added.
"It is usually difficult against German sides and against the top ones even more so.
“We have won the European Cup three times. They have won it on four occasions so you are talking about two clubs with massive history; full of experience and full of great players so hopefully it’s going to be a great spectacle.”
Comparing the Bayern side of then and now, he stated: "The team we played against in 1999 was really powerful. It had strength all the way through.
"Now Bayern have a lot of trickery with Ribery and Robben and some other individual match-winners.
“But our European record in recent times has been good and if we play to the best of our ability we really fancy ourselves.”
The second leg of the quarter-final is at Old Trafford on Wednesday 7 April. This article is from the BBC News website. © British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
