Ronaldo to have injury assessed

**Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo will travel to Portugal to be assessed by his national team’s doctors.**Ronaldo has been picked for Portugal’s two-legged World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Hercegovina but Real claim he is not fit because of an ankle injury.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will travel to Portugal in the next few hours,” read a statement on Real’s website.

“He will put himself at the disposal of the medical services of the Portuguese football federation.”

Ronaldo picked up his injury playing for the Spanish club in a Champions League game against Marseille on 30 September and has not played in seven games since.

But he did figure for Portugal in a World Cup qualifier against Hungary on 10 October when he aggravated the problem.

Who will come through the play-offs and make it to South Africa
Portugal, World Cup semi-finalists in 2006, play Bosnia-Hercegovina over two legs in Lisbon and then Zenica four days later, with the aggregate winners qualifying for the 2010 finals in South Africa.

Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz hopes Ronaldo can figure, despite Real saying he is two weeks away from being able to play, and he has told the Bernabeu outfit to trust the national side’s medical team.

“Based on the rules and principles governing clubs and associations, we have put Cristiano in the squad,” he told Portuguese sports daily A Bola.

"Of course, I welcome that these principles have been met. I have always said that this is a technical decision and that everyone must be observed before being cleared to play.

"Cristiano and everyone will be observed. Our medical team are competent and responsible, and you will see what happens.

"I do not understand the nervousness in some sectors. It is a decision that is non-negotiable, unavoidable, a decision that protects the interests of the player.

"I was coach of Real. The club deserves respect; I know the medical team, president and CEO. I have every respect for that club.

“(But) this fact cannot compel me to put any club below or above the others. All clubs and players deserve equal treatment.”
