ROME (Reuters) - Italy’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia has converted to Islam, the second time in seven years that an envoy of Rome to the land of Mecca has adopted its religion.

Torquato Cardilli, a career diplomat from overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Italy, revealed his decision to Saudi newspapers on Saturday, his 59th birthday. Italian diplomatic sources confirmed the announcement on Monday.

His official conversion was made on the eve of the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan, which began on November 16 in Saudi Arabia. Cardilli himself could not be reached for comment but an employee at his embassy in Riyadh confirmed the reports.

The Saudi embassy in Rome said it planned a statement later. An embassy spokeswoman said there was no record of any Saudi ambassador to Italy ever converting to Catholicism.

Italy’s Foreign Ministry had no comment.

The conversion of Cardilli – who is married with two children – follows the move to Islam made by Mario Scialoja, Italian ambassador to the Arab kingdom in 1994-95, who has since left the foreign service and is head of Italy’s Muslim League.

Scialoja’s decision came as a shock, made while he was Rome’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and long before he was posted to Riyadh.

Cardilli’s change of faith follows years of study of Islam. A graduate in oriental culture and languages from the University of Naples, Cardilli has spent much of his 33-year diplomatic career in the Muslim world.

Following postings in Sudan, Syria, Iraq and Libya, he took over the embassy in Riyadh in October last year. Cardilli has also served as ambassador to Albania and Tanzania.

His personal move comes at a sensitive time, with Italy a member of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the hardline Islamic Taliban movement in Afghanistan and barely two months after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi offended the Muslim world by saying Western Christian civilisation was superior to Islam.

Corriere della Sera newspaper said Cardilli had been recalled to Rome “for consultations”.

Some 3,000 to 5,000 Italians have converted to Islam from Catholicism in recent years, according to figures from the Union of Islamic Organisations and Communities.

A spokesman for the Italy-based group said it welcomed Cardilli’s entry into the Muslim community, saying of his conversion: “The ways of the Lord are infinite.”

Wow, if this is indeed true, I am very impressed and proud, especially since I work for an Italian food company distribution company. I don’t want to rub this in anyone’s face here at work…THAT wouldn’t be fair but I am touched and especially since 3,000-5,000 Italians have converted recently. Insh’allah more will convert no doubt as they see the true faith-Islam

Allah o Akbar!

I have read in the Saudi newspapers. It is true. Allah guides those who look for the Right Path.

When in Rome do as Romans do. I hope this is not like the Will Smith job someone posted a few days ago. Anyway, it is good to know that a Catholic is open to new horizons. I wish that Saudis would allow non-Muslim missionaries to operate in their country.

But they will never allow ahmadies to create fitna, Insha Allah.

i'm a sunni muslim & would like to ask factfinder as to who on this earth gave him the right to call any one fitna?....be they christians, jews, hindus, buddhists or ahmadhis for that matter..its in fact people like him who have given islam a bad name rather than non-muslims...if our holy prophet(pboh) never said a bad thing about anyone , be them muslim or non-muslim, then what kind of authority is factfinder( i'd like to see wht facts u've found)....the envoy who is believed to have become a muslim must have come across some sincere muslims for him to have been impressed...get ur act together & send out some good signs.Rather than pointing fingers , show some character if u want to represent islam...otherwise keep ur views to urself & let others who will be a good example come to the fore

Doc200,
Do you even know who Ahmedis are and what they believe in?

Moona, by this statement you made:
"Insh'allah more will convert no doubt as they see the true faith-Islam"

I can only assume that you're implying that all other faiths are "false"... a very destructive and arrogant statement. You must also believe that the Pope will burn in hell since he is not Muslim.

well as a matter of fact, he will…

)) he commits shirk and it wont be forgiven at the day of judgement…thats all i know

Thanday payee jaan, ‘shirk’ goes a long way.. there are many many places where many of us could be committing it

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/eek.gif

Let’s not get arrogant and declare everyone else’s faith as false.. May Allah protect us from indulging in ‘shirk’.. knowingly and unknowingly.

subhanallah .

Ask those who convert.

yes scratch , i know very well who ahmadhis are & wht they believe in ( do u?..now be honest)...even knowing wht they believe in, i am still a sunni muslim (InshaAllah)..which may in its self explain what my standing is with them...the point i'm making is, preach peace & harmony not contempt..i would hate to see an individual frm another religion coming on & calling muslims fitnas, trouble makers, terrorists, etc..did u know that the prophet (pboh) forbade muslims frm calling other religions names or ridiculing them , only for the reason that they may do the same to Islam? I think this says alot..but look around the world & tell me honestly if we are really angels..we are the victims of our own hypocricy..i include my self in that.

priceless

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

its pointless to talk to so called moderate muslims here…ok ok you can belive any thing you want, even that the christian ppl who commit shirk by worshipping jesus AS are actually on the right path and will all go to heaven, its only the fundementalist muslims who are destined for hell…thats whats u wanna hear right??

Thanday paa jee.. thanday hoa jao jee..

there are no moderate or hardline muslims.. there are muslims and there are idolators.

If Christians are idolators for elevating Jesus to the level of a 'God' then there are many acts of 'fundamentalist' muslims that do the same with other personalities in their history.

(al-Baqarah 2:62) Surely, those who believe and the Jews and the Christians and the Sabians - whichever party from among these truly believes in ALLAH and the Last Day and does good deeds, shall have their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon then nor shall they grieve.

(al-Ma'idah 5:69) Surely those who believed, and the Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians - whoso believes in ALLAH and the Last Day and does good deeds, on them shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve.

Why play 'God' and declare everyone a kafir? Let's look after our own backyards and leave all Judgement with Allah.

Just came across this article and thought I’d post it for the heck of it; apologies, I know there have been many such articles already posted here.
