Role of Women

:salam:

with all the scrutiny upon the muslim world today, a big concern is the role of women in Islam…

obviously, many people think we are oppressed…

i want to be able to defend my religion, but do not feel armed with enough knowledge, b/c i also question the equality of men and women in Islam

can you guys PLEASE explain the role of women, etc in Islam?

I would really like to understand my place within my religion without the adulterations of male-dominated culture.

thanks in advance!!

sadly what you'll get is a lot of sugarcoating over outdated misogynic rules formed by men in control of organizing the religion.

You're best left researching on your own with a critical mind.. DO NOT get swayed into listening to the "sisters" who have already reconciled with the status given to them and are the worst enemies of all women in Islam where they sit back and approve of the treatment meted out to them in the guise of obeying religious edicts.

In Islam men and women are not dealt with based on equality but equity. You can not have apples and oranges and treat both the same when they are both inherently different. Each gender has its own place. Of course this doesnt mean that many people dont breach the laws Islam sets and many muslims do give women less rights then they deserve.

714,

Women were given rights from the very beginning of Islam indeed they were given the right to choose and vote for their leaders long before the West ever treated women as anything other than cattle. The United Kingdom today for example, for all the freedom and rights it gives women, still sees a high number of abused women, one of the highest rates of divorce, in the world. It also has the distinction of having one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancies amongst teenagers in the world. Not to mention the tragedy of single mothers who are forced to take on both the role of mother and father. As for ‘freedom’ and ‘democracy’ Muslims from Chechnya, to Kashmir, to Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq know only too well, what it means.

PakistaniAbroad,

You're so blind to your own contradictions first you tell 714 to think critically and then you tell 714 not to listen to the sisters who understand their role in Islam most of whom are educated professionals.

Pakistani culture is sickening when it comes to their treatment of women. With their honor killings, forced marriages, no right to education. We all know about the case where the 'panchayat' judged that a woman be gang raped.

Are you calling the laws of Allah outdated? As in not applicable? Why are you even pretending to be Muslim, Is it because your secular ideas have no basis unless you give them strength with a hint of Islam.
