role of mother tongues

What role should mother tongues have in Pakistan?

mother tongues should be promoted. i have notices many countries including india, promote their languages far more, and in aus we have a hindi and many other indian languages as a subject in year 12 but no URDU let alone other languages

Re: role of mother tongues

I think the mother tongues should be abolished and one day Urdu will be spoken as a mother tongue by 99% of Pakistanis, and used in all spheres - government, business, education.

Pakistan needs to emulate China, which actively pursued a policy of wiping out minority languages so that now, Mandarin is the national language and is spoken as a mother tongue by 70% of the people and understood by nearly all. Also, it is the official language - not just on paper but in day to day life.

It is an official language of the UN and the West is now trying to learn it.

This is what you get when you have self-respect and take pride in your language and identity.

Pakistan needs Urdu for this purpose - and it will allow it to become a major world power like China.

Re: role of mother tongues

I think they need to be promoted as much as possible.

Mother tongues represent entire cultures and an identity.

Multi Lingual Brains are far more active and are more tolerant of new ideas!

One should not stop learning or draw a circle around knowledge available just in one language..................

Re: role of mother tongues

Urdu shouldn't be forced upon provinces. Make it a federal language, but do not make it required on private provincial matters. Urdu should bind us in Pakistan, not dominate us.

This coming from an urdu speaking, offspring of mohajirs.

Re: role of mother tongues

Mother tongues should b promoted, urdu should b learnt by everyone, and so should english. Studies show that children who learn to speak more than 1 language, r more intelligent when they grow older.

Dear All
AOA
Pakistan, in all its greatness, is unique in yet another way. By and large, most of the Pakistani students have to grapple, if not learn, three to four languages at a time. At their homes, they get a taste of their mother tongues (Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Seraiki, Hindko, Brohivi etc etc). In schools, there is Urdu, our National language. Then there is Arabic in Islamiyat and English either as a language or medium of Education.
Instead of being prejudiced, we must remember that every language has its own importance. In this scenario, the role of mother-tongue cannot and should not be undermined. Children must not forget their mother tongues. Yet at the same time, Urdu should not be considered as a burdon but rather a binding force for all the different areas and ethnicities of our country. On the other hand, Arabic is an obligation (only for Muslims) and English is a necessity.
Wassalam.

Re: role of mother tongues

I wouldnt say that they should be promoted as much as possible. That would be a kind of racism. Yet, I believe they should be preserved, since they have their own unique sweetness of them. Urdu is our national language, no one can do without it. And one does learn English too, since its the need of the hour. Poeple mostly tend to ignore their motehr tongues. I regret this because I wasnt taught my mother tongue. And now, when I try to speak in it, I end up all being funny and weird.

Re: role of mother tongues

We should try to save the mother tounges in their original form. Its sad to admit that todays spoken or even written urdu is no where close to its basic form. In fact sometimes you watch an urdu show and it feels that you are watching an hindi show ..

You listen to the lyrics of our songs and they sound like indian song ...

No disprespect to Hindi, its a great language, but folks please do not loose your identity as Urdu speakinh nation

Since when we are a NATION or wo bi Urdu speaking nation ... wait till someone comes and starts giving out to u ......

They will tell ya that they happily prefer their regional languages over Urdu at any given day ....

Sire .. Urdu will soon die with the pakistan .... just wait for few more years .....

the problem is the provinces are multi lingual.....so urdu acts as a good bind....urdu should be forced upon the provinces....

the role of the mother tongue.....well it is and should be spoken at home, one should be educated at shcool in it until they learn urdu, one should be able to read and write their mother tongue.....and people are not banned from using it so thy can speak it outside......people should be able to write in it toeach other, promote cultural events i n mother tongue.....

My Respected Aliyish,

I would humbly differ from it on account of the fact, that despite a couple of centuries, Urdu is still living and flourishing. Moreover, Pakistan is here to stay. This statement that it will soon die is in the air since 1947.

Regards.
