So we are discussing the role of Aamer Sohail in the other thread, and I didn’t want to side-track that discussion, hence this new thread.
Anyway, what do you think is the role of a Selection Committee/Chief Selector for our national cricket team?
In my view, at national level, under normal circumstances 8-9 players pretty much select themselves. So it really boils down to the remaining 2-3 slots where the selectors have some lee-way.
Ofcourse, post WC '03 was not a normal circumstance for Pakistan, when we made large-scale changes and fired a bunch of oldies.
Anyway, moving along, in my view, the real role of the selection committee should be to keep an eye on young and promising talent taking part in the domestic cricket and pick them up at the right time for the national duty. It takes a good sense of what will and will not work at the international level for them to carry out this job.
Who do you think is better for the job? One who has very recently retired from international cricket or the one who has retired some time ago? Keeping in mind, that a recent retiree may have some bones to pick with the current team members.

That is exactly why it is not a good idea to appoint someone who has been recently retired. You have so many cricketing intellects in Pakistan, people who played during the 50s, 60s and 70s....

Sharaabi, then the problem may be that those 'oldies' may not be familiar with the nuances of modern day cricket. Many will argue that the technique has evolved a lot.
Aamer Sohail may be a bad example due to his hot temper, but does it really help to hire really old former players?
For a selector, it is very important that he has guts to standby his decision and doesn't take influence from anyone. Amir Sohail is too weak for that.
I would say Imran Khan is the best choice for a chief selector only if he can take time off from domestic politics. He has given us Wasim, Waqar, Inzamam and many more stars.
2nd choice would be Javed Miandad as he is a very good batsman and can see potential players who have the capacity to do well with bat.
