In 2002 Mukhtaran Bibi, a 30-year old Pakistani, was raped as punishment after her brother was accused of fraternizing with a woman from a rival tribe. An international outcry went up when it was revealed that Bibi’s village council had approved the attack, later a higher court sent her rapists to jail and awarded her $8,300.00. Bibi, who never got an education, used the money to start two schools in her village. “We must improve the minds of boys and girls if we’re to improve women’s rights,” she told reporters.
