Bollywoodhungama review:
ROCKSTAR does not live up to the confidence and expectations from the otherwise very skilled and accomplished film-maker Imtiaz Ali. The film suffers immensely due to a disorderly screenplay, especially in its post-interval portions. However, the silver lining or the comforting prospect is the virtuoso performance by Ranbir Kapoor and the captivating score by A.R. Rahman, which justify that one extra star.
Re: Rockstar-Ranbir Kapoor's New Movie
only partially heard one of the songs. couldn't make out a word of what was being sung. It was typical ARR music. I was expecting him to do something more along the lines of Rock music similar to what Pakistani bands do. I think a Pakistani band could have done a better job in scoring the music of this movie. The song I heard seemed waay too filmi. Rock On is a good example of how a music of a movie like Rockstar should be done.

Rockstar is a must-watch!
Imtiaz Ali makes love stories unlike anyone else. All his films: Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met, and Love Aaj Kal, have been endearing, light-hearted tales of friendship and love. Rockstar is an intensely passionate tale about friendship, romance, and love. The lovers are star-crossed.
It doesn’t matter what the reviews say. Rockstar is a movie that people are going to watch anyway. Some may applaud it, some may hate it. But it is journey everyone must experience!
Ranbir plays Janardhan Jakhar aka Jordan. He is nerdy and very desi but is essentially a nice guy who wants to be a musician but he doesn’t know how to make a mark. His canteen-owner friend suggests that he could get his heart broken for the music to flow. He manages to befriend college hottie Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri). They do crazy things together. She gets married and goes away and he becomes the music sensation he always dreamed of. What follows is the reunion of the friends who discover that they have fallen for each other quite passionately. So what will happen now?
The first half is an entertaining breeze while the second half is intense, passionate, and heavy with some light moments. It has Imtiaz Ali’s signature cheeky and unique humour that tickles you in the unlikeliest of situations. The nuances are wonderful. The camaraderie and the passionate chemistry between the leads is utterly natural, easy-going, palpable, and unabashed. Ranbir creates most of it and the desirable Nargis does well in following his lead. You really feel for these lovers; they make you laugh and cry. It is not every day that a commercial, mainstream Hindi film shows a married heroine unabashedly frolicking with her buddy-turned-lover. It is refreshing that the rockstar in the film is distinctly desi, even uncouth, and these traits remain mostly unchanged through the course of the film. He sings Hindi songs, he sings different kinds of songs, and his flair for music shines. The movie tells us that music is a universal language. There are fourteen songs and they are all lovely. AR Rahman’s finest score in a while enhances the narrative and the journey of Jordan seamlessly. You will like some songs more and the album simply grows on you. The videos are superb. The non-linear narrative is engaging and stylish. Imtiaz and his editor Aarti Bajaj have mastered that now. An authentic North-Indian flavour dominates most of the film.
Yes, the movie has its flaws. Heer’s wedding is rather abrupt and her marriage is the most formal one we have seen in a while. The scene between her and her husband (model Moufid Aziz) is a tad forced. The second half has some exaggerated portions and Jordan is angry through most of it. You don’t expect the movie to end when it does. Do stay till the last song is complete.
The production values are flawless and detailed, the cinematography (Anil Mehta) and locales (Prague and Kashmir) are stunning. A special mention must be made for the costumes (by Manish Malhotra, Aki Narula, and Dolly Ahluwali Tewari). Jordan wears dhoti pants and Heer wears the most gorgeous Kashmiri clothes ever!
It is a delight to see Shammi Kapoor on screen. His star-presence and charm are intact. The tribute to him in the beginning is sweet and apt, as is what Janardhan does in Kashmir. His entry was met with claps and whistles. Ranbir has a very layered and difficult role and he pulls it off effortlessly. He is a gifted actor. In the first half, he is the nerdy, good-hearted friend, then he gradually becomes a cool musician, and in the end he is an obsessive and unpredictable lover who cares two hoots for his career. His expression of rage, apathy, and confusion is just right and he has the swagger of a star. It is amazing how Ranbir changes his body language and he even has the maniacal streak of a rock sensation. He deserves to sweep the awards next year. We hope Imtiaz does too because it is hard to imagine anybody else pulling off this film. Nargis Fakhri is expressive enough for a debut film and Imtiaz manages to extract a decent performance for her. Her dubbing tends to jar at times. Yet, she is strikingly beautiful and has a presence and that is half the job done. She is a good dancer. The only person that Imtiaz has in all his films is Teddy Maurya and he does a great job as a music composer. Piyush Mishra is pitch-perfect as the slimy and manipulative music producer. Aditi Rao Hydari makes a mark as a journalist. Shernaz Patel is aptly cast as Nargis’ mother and she is delightful. Kumud Mishra does a fantastic job as Janardhan’s enterprising friend and agent.
Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar is different from what he has made before. The emotional journey will play in your head even long after you have walked out of the auditorium and it definitely merits more viewings.
