NEW DELHI (AFP) - India skipper Sourav Ganguly said his team made a “mistake” by denying star batsman Sachin Tendulkar a double-century in the opening Test against Pakistan at Multan.

Tendulkar was taken by surprise when stand-in captain Rahul Dravid declared the first innings closed at 675-5 as he was just six runs short of his second successive double-century.

“It’s a mistake made by the team,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

“There is no point making it an issue,” said the Indian skipper, who returned home Thursday for treatment after missing the opening Test due to a back injury.

Dravid was named captain in Ganguly’s absence, eventually leading India to their maiden Test triumph in Pakistan on Thursday. The tourists won the match by an innings and 52 runs.

“Whoever has made a mistake, it’s for the team to accept it. It’s for all of us to accept it, so let’s not make it an issue,” said Ganguly.

“Whether it’s Sachin, Rahul, myself or whoever has made a mistake let’s forget about it and go ahead and win the series. We are friends. As friends, we have made mistakes. As friends, we forgive each other.”

However, former Australian captain Ian Chappell, writing in the Hindustan Times, said Dravid had established the team priority by declaring when he did.

“This was the correct decision as it showed his team, a blending of youth and experience, that victory rather than personal milestones is the ultimate prize,” Chappell said.

Ganguly said he hoped to be fit for the third and final Test starting at Rawalpindi on April 13.

I agree ,It was a mistake. But then Sachin shouldnot have made his disappointment public.

So Miandad was right all along. It was a mistake. Actually, Ganguly should not be saying anything about this. His answer should be, "I did not play the test, remember?".

Absolutley he was right. There is no doubt about it. But he was saying it too frequently .What he should have done is that he could have just ignored the question or have said.." it is Indian team's internal matter. Talk to me about my team".

Pretty much on same line as yout suggesttion to Ganguly.

For an Individual it was a mistake

For the Team it was a wise Descision

Its another story that the team could not get another wicket inspite of the 30 minute extension, otherwise everyone including Tendulkar would be praising Dravid.

now if only miandad'd do something right about his team. oh what went wrong, mr hyderbadi rickshaw?

queer, i think you should not take miandad so seriously. Even his team doesn't take him as serious as you are doing it here.

what wise decision? he needed 6 runs for chrissake, not 60! i feel so bitter

Of course Ganguly will say it was a mistake! He is already scared Dravid will take is job, he's just trying to make it known that Dravid made a mistake (read: and is therefore ONLY temporary captain material). lol, those sneaky bengalis!
