Well I am having a BS degree in CS but I am a house wife n haven’t practiced anything since latest 3 years. But now I want to get Oracle certification and then get into the field…
I am going to Pakistan n planning to get the training for 10g from there n then take exams, I am thinking about NICON institute lahore, actually my BIL has done from there n now he is mA having a really good job here in USA.
Do you people think after getting training for 3 months and studying by myself I will be able to take the exam? any other tip?
I do have faith in my abilities n i am quite determined but is it possible in 3-4 months with this much effort or next to impossible?
And i have started reading Oracle beginners guide n other books, what should i know before starting the training?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
What sorta certification are you interested in? Developer or DBA? Any related experience?
As per your question is concerned, three months are enough for getting certified in sqlplus and part 1 but you may not be able to finish the track. Um.. you may be able to finish it but honestly you gotta work very hard...
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
I am interested in DBA, no related experience just studied oracle 9i n currently started studying again...so what if i get the training in the morning n evening both from 2 locations> they have hands on training n exams also.
So how much time is just enough along with training from an institute for 3 months?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
Hmm.. As I said you can do it but you gotta force yourself in it and work very hard, giving sacrifice of other fun. Hands on training will surely help.
It'll atleast take 4 months to complete the DBA track.
So, say you go there and complete your training, get certified, come back..then wut? What have you thought about job?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
Why are you going to do it from NICON?
It is always better to get training from recognized institutions. Here is a list of Oracle’s authorized training partners:

well first my concern is only to get the certification in this way i will get on track then will look for some job...
SID_NY firstly i thought about going to techno-ed but they are going too fast n as far as i know they are mostly for professionals with background knowledge n these institutes are for students...but i can give them both a try starting with NICON n then going for oracle certified institutes
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
Well, unfortunately I've no idea about Lahore institutes but yes I agree that you gotto choose one which can not only give you most time for hands-on but also can provide a class of education regarding it. The techno-ed has the same problem as you mentioned that the pace is fast and they'll not let you sit for too long. May be not even answer your all questions.
I'd have recommended Orasoft in Karachi or other ones that I know there.
About Job, I believe you have think harder to get some experience from somewhere on paper. PM me if you are not understanding it or have a different opinion. You are not going to get even a entry-level job these days without it. Gone are days when only certification used to be enough.

You are right but the thing is I am going to Lahore and can only attend some institute there, and I only want to get certification so that I can at least be on track, what about options for internships afterwards would it be helpful in getting some job in future?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
For that, You gotto know someone in the practical field working as a DBA, who can let you enter any well-esteemed organization as an internee. And trust me, its not easy to get an interneship either. Its very very complicated.
I'm a Oracle DBA as well, but honestly I cant let you be an internee either. Yes I see junior DBA positions but it also comes very seldom.
The only way is as I told you earlier. Thats how I've seen people getting jobs fairly easily.

Now I am getting curios, does experience from some other country counts here? n is this way successful in other IT fields also?
My BIL is a successful dba here n he adopted the same route about 3 years ago..from NICON but he got the training twice to get the certification. i understand it was 3 yrs ago not now.
But whats wrong with letting someone do unpaid internship in someone's organization?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
Um.. may be very big organizations like AIG or others let you do that but it doesnt happen in ours. Also, things were way different three years back. Now its totally opposite. Your BIL can let you in if you talk to him upfront.
Earlier, many ppl used to go bak to india and do all that, come back and take the best of jobs. But remember, when they used to come back, they used to show 9, 10 years experiance. Thats wut its all about.
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
means whatever is on your resume, like 4-5 yrs or 8-10 yrs you need to defend it, thats the key...
the discussion has moved to job but my first priority is to get the certification...so now I am thinking of going with NICON like institutes and towards end of that I will join some oracle certified institute...how does it sound?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
Oracle certification is always a good idea but remember it should be just one step of your plan. You gotto get a job ASAP otherwise you'll forget everything. And for that you desperately need some experience, atleast on paper. So that when you go to interviews, you can justify yourself with the gained knowledge.
Also, these days there are very rare opportunities without Oracle RAC. So I'd say take one step ahead, and try to do RAC certification as well. Even I'm certified but that is without RAC and if I get some time like you are getting, my first preference to be certified with RAC, and then further Golden gate and streams.
But anywaz, chalk out your plan very very carefuly and act accordingly. You should be crystal clear of what you are trying to do and what to achieve!! Good luck!
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
I don't know about Oracle RAC, it must be more advanced and difficult than Oracle certification. where to get its training from?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
what are the prerequisites for Oracle certification training, means how much knowledge should I be having of oracle/ its platforms, etc before starting my training from some institute?
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
Well. the prerequisites are very general computing background, understanding of basic programming, concepts of loops, cursors etc., software mindset, relational database management understanding.
Here I recommend a beautiful book "Database Management systems" by Raghu Ramakrishnan/Johannes Gehrke. Please try to read it before you go in. It'll be very handy.
Regarding your earlier question about RAC etc, I think keep it aside as a second step. And for that only go to Oracle affiliated institutes who can provide hands-on RAC training which normal institutes cant provide due to its complex architecture.
Re: Road to Oracle Certification
i m prep myself for DBA certificationnn … i didnt hav any experience still i m comfortable.
All the material tht i have is more thn enough for me , ther r alot of DVDs available online free of charge and sites too . I hav gone through most of them but the 1 i recommend is
http://www.oraclecoursebooks.com/
its thorough n covering all the aspects i n detail.
