Ritual or Farce?

Why is it that the muslims gather each year for hajj to get killed trying to throw stones upon the shayateen (satan) at three points?

We already say “Lahol wala quawata ila bila il aliual azeem” and cast satan with stones which makes him run screaming like a banshee only a voice animals could hear (I’ve only heard this, please correct me if I am wrong).

So, why is it that muslims practice this ritual? Whats the reasoning behind it? So many get killed every year? We already pay our respect to the Divine by circling his house. Whats the point of circling the Kibla? Kissing the black stone? Hanging on the doors of the Kibla? Cutting a piece of your hair? Shaving your head?

All these rituals especially the one about casting satan away with stones. Whats the point of it?

I was having this conversation with my jewish co-worker and he didn’t understand nor did I, all told him I will get back to him after the weekend. Obviously, gupshup is not my only source so I’d appreciate any input regarding these questions.

Lets keep it clean, shall we

Jazka Allah khair

First of all Coco peopel who lose their lives on the sacred grounds are not killed....they are destined for Heaven. They give their life in the name of Allah...there is no better casue than that. I will wait to see what others have to say about the stoning of Ibless(ritual as you call it)? BTW: Did you ask your jewish friend what is the purpose of bobing your head and most of your body back and forth while reading from Torah in front of a wall? Just curious what is the reason? See if he/she knows? :)

One word: Sunnah

its sunnat-e-ibrahimi....
and when u r told to perform soemthing, u MUST do it and not question 'why'....

why r u told to drink water with the right hand????
does it make any difference if u drink it with the left????
no worldly reason i guess, just spiritual....
just an 'excuse' for Allah to forgive His people that He loves so much....

Kaleem: This is for my own knowledge and curiousity when I ask, its not to degrade Islam but to seek the reasons. Ok, so they're not killed and destined for heaven. By stones? such a cruel death to be stoned down or trampled? that too by mistake?
Believe you me I did tackle his points too and some of them he couldnt' answer at all. As of this point its just dialouging back n forth.

Armughal: Again, its just for my own knowledge so pardon me if I come off as ignorant and refute your points with worldly logic. Sunnat e Ibrahim which means we can or choose not to follow it. Its not wajib on us. Right? People drink water with their right hand because the Prophet did it. The right hand signifies cleaniness and the left is used for 'other' stuff. I understand that Allah gives us chances time after time so that we may enter his bliss.

Faisal: If it is indeed sunnat. Did the last Prophet perform this sunnat as well? Did the Prophet not forsee so many lives being lost over this before performing this ritual? Life is of value in Islam is it not? Then why die or live to rise into another state through such a horrible way?

Our Prophet :saw: showed us, by example, how to perform hajj. To do it with discipline and reverence is upto us. The present high number of pilgrims need wider facilities and more sense in each pilgrim. That doesn’t mean the way for performing hajj is incorrect or a farce. It just means, the present day muslims should perform it in a more orderly and disciplined manner.
