I was just going to the thread about why the home based vendors / designers rip off you westerners and thought I should post our side of the story too!
First off, I admit there are people who try to rip everybody off, but the mojority of us, especially the ones on GS are very reasonable or so I believe. Second, I am not trying to pinpoint anyone seller / buyer here.
Usually our costs are more than what most of you assume them to be. For a casual outft, we don’t just go out once, buy the fabric and give it to the tailor and then go and pick it up. No, for example for a casual Gul Ahmed / Alkaram etc. we may have to make several trips to find the fabric (for example a specific print), make several phone calls to check availability at various places, get several different laces (which in themselves my cost over a thousand of rs at times). The designs in the catalogs are usually very elaborate and most of the time along with the laces, we need to get embroideries done, get extra fabrics, which we have to GO AND SEARCH FOR. Then all those tens and scores of panels are never stitched for PKR 500, as someone pointed out… for those elaborate paneled outfits, the stitching costs can be as high as PKR 5000.
We have to make several trips to the kaam walas to check the kaam is being done the right way.. we have to keep calling the kaam walas and the tailors to keep reminding them we’ll be needing the outfits on a certain date. I am not just talking about the effort put in, it costs me money too. There are a number of vendors who are just driven to and from the shopping places and the workshops in their dad’s cars and they don’t have to pay for that.. their fathers or husbands pay their phone bills and they don’t even know they may need to add in the depreciation cost of their vehicle and their computer
These vendors may charge you very low prices, but a few of us do consider these as our costs and these actually ARE our costs.
There are thousands of vendors selling stuff on FB and there’s so much competition that you can’t survive unless you keep your profit margins minimal.. and I believe most of us do that.
Then come the wholesale orders. Come to think of it, our profit margins are already MINIMAL, please do not expect big discounts. We do know what wholesale means and please wholesale doesn’t mean 7 or 8 outfits. If you expect bigger discounts, please place bigger orders. We can only offer you wholesale prices, if we ourselves can get the stuff at discounted rates. Most of us home based vendors do not stock fabric or outfits, we just buy them on order by order basis. If I get an order for 5 different outfits, the retailer that I am buying from is not going to give me wholesales rates for them. He’s going to sell me 5 outfits at retail price.. not wholesale. If I get an order for 50 outfits, I can offer a big discount and still make a profit, but I am sorry but for 5 or 8 outfits, I may offer a reasonable discount, but not a “WHOLESALE DISCOUNT”, coz that won’t leave me anything and we are all here to work for profit.
Once again, I am not trying to defend the people who are charging you twice or thrice as much as the outfit actually should and I know there are people out there you are doing just that. I would request you to pinpoint, name them… instead of just saying “ALL HOME BASED VEDORS”.
We are good girls.. don’t group us with ‘them’ ![]()
