Right to die ...

Should a muslim be given right to die in an extreme medical condition ?

Re: Right to die ...

I was once extremely sick and made it out alive. Only Allah swt has that right.

Re: Right to die …

Give me a gun and let me decide. I think its only fair

Re: Right to die ...

I think the person who is sick should be allowed to make that call. Only they know the pain that they are going through.

Re: Right to die ...

And this question is most definitely not about the usual illness we may encounter .. this is about the time when one feels completely hopeless from cure and care perspective ...

Re: Right to die ...

Mayyuusi kufur hay!!

Re: Right to die ...

I say yes. I might sound insensitive here.. but Whats the point in giving them drugs to function when u know they will get worse and die eventually. put them and their family out of misery please.

Re: Right to die ...

^ I am inclined to agree.

However if heaven forbid the situation came about where one had abolutely no chance of making it out alive, the situation related by an old comrade of mine comes to mind. Where a man in thier patrol team had stepped on a landmine which was particularly savage and tore of both his legs. The force of the explosion also flung the poor soul a good few feet away and he was in obvious pain from the numerous other injuries he sustained. Since in this happened in the early 90's when Satcom systems had only been introduced to a very few Western Armies let alone peace keeping troops in Africa there was little chance of getting an imeadiate fix on the position or calling in a Casevac. So the commanding officer made the decision to call off the recce team and bring the wounded man back along with the rest of the team. However for whatever reason the man who was still conscious asked to be relieved of the pain. The injuries were such that morphine would probably have killed him and without imeadiate surgery and a massive blood transfusion he was very unlikely to survive.

His comrades were forced to hear his agonizing screams for part of the journey back until sadly the man passed away from his injuries. The whole team was left traumatised and to this day they all feel to an extent somewhat guilty or ashamed that they were unable to meet thier fellow comrades last request. I for one would never want to be in such a situation.

Its hard to judge people let alone pass a verdict on the matter. In this case it should be left to Allah to make the ultimate decision... sometimes in extreme cases as humans we dont know what is wrong or right and so we take whatever we feel to be the best course.

Allah is all forgiving and we must trust in his mercy on such matters.

Re: Right to die ...

That is exactly what I was getting at with my post. Illness you feel hopeless from cure and care etc. we don't have the ability as human beings to comprehend why one should die at a time decided by Allah swt. So if we can't comprehend smtng fully, we should not have that right.

Re: Right to die ...

I think you are confusing two things. We do have the right to decline medical treatment!! but that doesnt necessarily imply right to live or die.

Re: Right to die ...

^ No I was just talking about some neurological diseases where u have to take levadopa to mimic neuronss..

scenarios like " so ur mom has 5-8 years where she might benefit from levadopa but then everythings gonna get worse, though most msa patients die of falling anyway.. so when ur starting physio therapy?"
.. wtf? ..

Re: Right to die ...

taking anyone's life (including your own) isn't allowed......

but those in vegetative state or permanently on machines.......... i don't know.....
