Ricky Ponting Retires

Ponting, one of Australia’s greatest cricketers, will leave the game at the end of the Third Test against South Africa in Perth, starting tomorrow, saying he “is not good enough to go on” to the Ashes series he dreamt of making.

The former Australian captain broke down as he told his teammates the news before practice.

“I tried to say a lot but I didn’t get much out,” Ponting said. “They’d never seen me emotional before, but I was this morning.”

Most of the team cried with the former captain.

Ponting was asked what he had contributed to the game over the decades of his involvement.

“I know I have given cricket my all, it’s been my life for 20 years, there’s not much more I could give,” he said.

There was talk during the week that selectors had argued about Ponting’s future in the game, but the players said yesterday he knew he had the full support of coach Mickey Arthur and captain Michael Clarke.

Ponting’s wife Rianna and two daughters Emmy and Mattise along with manager James Henderson were on hand for the announcement.

“That’s my new team there,” Ponting said indicating toward his family.

The dry-eyed skipper read from a small piece of paper with notes on it then took questions, his teammates gathered grim faced at the back of the room.

Clarke looked emotional as his former skipper left the room with his family and he took the chair to speak about the Test ahead.

He then broke down and cried when asked what Ponting had said to the team.

Ponting said he began to think about retirement at the end of the Adelaide Test and had many long nights discussing it with his wife.

He was in good spirits in the nets at Perth this morning preparing for the Test ahead which he says he is more determined to win than any in his life.

If Australia beat South Africa in Perth they will win the series and become the number one ranked side in the world.

“This week I’ve got a big job ahead, I’ve got to lift my level of play from what it was last week,” he said.

Ponting said he was disappointed with his results in this series.

“It wasn’t what I expected of myself,” he said.

Ponting will equal Steve Waugh’s record of 168 Tests in Perth - only Sachin Tendulkar has played more.

The Australian scored 13,366 Test runs - again second to Tendulkar - including 41 centuries, 52 50s and averaged 52.

He played 375 one-day matches, scoring 13,704 runs, scoring 30 centuries, 82 50s with a highest score of 164 and an average of 42.

Ponting said he would continue to play domestic cricket for Tasmania for the rest of the season. Never a sentimentalist he is retiring ahead of a home Test.

Julia Gillard said she wished the former Australian captain well for whatever he chose to do in his future.

“He can be confident that he is going to go into the next phase of his life with a lot of gratitude and thanks from the Australian community which is full of cricket tragics,” the Prime Minister told parliament.

''People are going to miss watching his performances but do wish him well for whatever the future brings.”

Tony Abbott said Ponting was “undoubtedly one of the all-time greats of one of the very great games” who had “given tremendous pleasure to cricket lovers around the world”.

Former Aussie Test batsman Michael Slater, one of Ponting’s former teammates, also paid tribute.

“Just heard the news about Ricky’s retirement … glad he gets to go on his own terms,” he wrote on Twitter. “Looking forward to a double ton tomorrow!”

Even the British were doffing their hat to “Punter”.

BBC foreign correspondent Nick Bryant wrote: “Propose a brief halt to Anglo-Australian cricketing hostilities to celebrate the career of Ricky Ponting. “Truly one of the greats.”

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

Looks like he was a great player.

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

^^

Why just "Looks like he was a great player". He was a great player on his own right. Wishing him the very best !!!

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

I'll be honest I never liked the guy. He just appeared to be very arrogant in his "good times". Nevertheless he was a great cricketer. So all the best for his future.

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

Exactly my thought ..... Umer du kannst meine Gedanken lesen :(

A great Batsmen ..... an OK Captain ..... not the best sportsmen around ..... but hey he did his best for his Country ..... Playing more than 500 intl. matches, Winning 3 CWC, Winning over 100 Test Matches, scoring more than 26K Intl. Runs all around the world

Wish him all the Best for his future life

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

:)

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

Have not seen him play too much - since did not watch cricket during most of his playing days except last 2.5 years. And during last 2.5 years I typically don't watch the other team batting.

I have seen his Fielding - highly impressive. His sportsmanship - not very. His stats are great.

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

^^ Tend to agree that he was not a great sportsman !!!

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

Could have timed it better imo. Ponting's form has been on a clear decline for a good 18-24 months (cf. Sachin). He should have seen the writing on the wall and called it quits after performing better than expected against India at home last year

Lara retired at his peak (could have easily carried on playing tests for another 2 years). Same cannot be said about either Ponting or Sachin (if and when the time comes)

In his prime one of the best players of pace bowling, a great puller

Tributes to Ricky Ponting

Former Australia bowler Glenn McGrath on Twitter: "Well done Punter on an incredible career. It would be great to see you finish with a ton. It was an honour to play alongside you."
**
Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden** on Twitter: "Punter, congratulations on a fantastic career. Your departure will be a massive hole in the Australian cricket team."
**
Former England captain Michael Vaughan** on Twitter: "The best batsman I had the privilege to play against was Ricky Ponting. Australian cricket will not be the same without him. Punter played better against me than Sachin Tendulkar did. Both are incredible players, but if I had to pick one it would be Ricky."

**Some of Ponting’s achievements:

**- Won 3 World Cups

  • Won 2 World Cups as a Captain

  • A record 34 consecutive wins in World cup matches

  • 2nd Highest score (140 n.o. v India, 2003 WC) in a World Cup Final.

    http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283747.html

  • Most Test Wins as captain (48 from 77 tests). Graeme Smith is next with 45 wins from 97 matches and should become the first captain to lead his country in 100 test matches (against Pakistan next year) and also the first to lead them to 50 test wins at some point in 2013
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283746.html Steve Waugh though has the best captaincy record of all (an incredible W/L ratio of 4.55)

  • Most consecutive Test wins as captain: 16, shared with Steve Waugh

  • Most Test wins as a player (108)

  • More “winning” Test runs than Lara, Tendulkar and Kallis

  • Most Test runs in a calendar year by an Australian: 1,544 in 2005. He has passed 1,000 test runs in a calendar year on five separate occasions, in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008
    http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/284248.html

  • Second most Test Catches (196) by a fielder. Dravid holds the record (210) http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283548.html

  • Thrice scored hundreds in both innings of a Test, a record he shares with Sunil Gavasker

  • He’s the only batsman in the history of cricket to score hundreds in both innings of his 100th test match - achieved against South Africa in 2005 scoring 120 and 143*

  • Most Double Centuries against one team: 3 against India 257, 242 and 221

  • Best batsman of a formidable batting line-up.To top Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist, Mark Taylor, Michael Clarke year after year is not a joke.- His test record of 13,378 runs from 168 matches at an average of 51.85 (41 test hundreds) is second only to Sachin. Kallis should overtake him though
    http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/223646.html

  • Most ODI runs after Sachin, 13704 runs at 42.03 (30 hundreds)
    http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/83548.html

Ponting, 38 next month, made his debut against Sri Lanka at the WACA in 1995.

Ricky Ponting - Take a bow,** One of the best of the modern era.**

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

one of the best of the best among the lot…who cares if he was arrogant..he was arrogant because he was THE BEST and he had confidence in himself…i will take an “arrogant champion” player any day than a “humble idiot with mediocre performance”…but the worst combination is “arrogant but mediocre” such as umar akmal, afridi (afridi of post-2009)

those who saw punter 1997-2007 know what I mean…he was master blaster…that trademark pull shot against fast bowlers… executing it with an unbelievable reaction time on green tops…that was something

the only minor drawback was his performance against quality spinners on spinning tracks…good luck Punter..YOU WERE THE BEST!

here are some fabulous pull and hook shots by the master..enjoy

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

End of An ERA

One of the greatest batsman ever i would say........Bigger than even Tendulkar cz Ponting is a match winner unlike Tendulkar

He was very proud though but still I think he was just a okayish captain nothing great cz the team he had all were legends

His innings against India in finals of 2003 was the highlight of his career

Re: Ricky Ponting Retires

What a legend! Your arrogant batting shall be missed!!!!!!!!!
