Doesn't mean he is right. Maybe seeing his team getting knocked was too much for him and was looking for excuses.

The following might help understand doosra

off-spin = the ball spins from off to on or comes into the batsman

leg-spin = the ball spins from on to off or moves away from the batsman

doosra or Chinaman = Off-spinner’s other one i.e. the ball moves away from the batsman (from on to off)

googly = leg-spinner’s other one i.e. the ball comes into the batsman (from off to on)

I think Holding does have a point. It is impossible to bowl the Chinaman or ‘doosra’ as it is called now without some straightening of the elbow. It can be bowled legally but it is true you cannot bowl the doosra from the wrist alone esp. over the 22 yards. This is why the ICC changed the laws - set the legal limit of 15 degrees of permissible straightening of the elbow joint for all bowlers in international cricket - to accomodate it

The point is most international bowlers are able to bowl the doosra by straightening the elbow upto 15 degrees & hence not bowling it illegally, so Holding is wrong there

Saqlain had a very straight arm. There are even many pictures of him bowling in short sleeves (so confident was he about his action) and yet no umpire ever raised doubts over his bowling action.

But with a lot of other bowlers incl. Murali, Bhajji and Ajmal, you can actually see the straightening of the elbow with your own eyes, not in slow mo but live

But Holding’s ire should be directed at the ICC for creating a stupid allowance for the doosra, which discourages people to try to bowl it with as straight an arm as possible as Saqlain did.

**( ps. Doosra (Chinaman): **The bowler delivers the ball with the same finger action as a normal off break but cocks the wrist so that the back of the hand faces the batsman. This gives the ball spin in the opposite direction to that for an off break, causing it to spin from the leg side to the off side to a right-handed batsman.

The doosra is the off-spinner’s equivalent of the leg-spinner’s googly, which spins in the opposite direction to the leg spinner’s stock ball.
