Retro/Vintage Fashion

Hey girls,

I need some help designing a 70’s era inspired desi attire for my brother-in-law’s upcoming wedding. Something like old bollywood/lollywood glamour. I am thinking along the lines of what Deepika Paudakone wore in the first half of the movie ‘Om Shanti Om.’ I’ll be having my makeup and hair styling done in the same manner, but i’m not sure about the outfit yet.

I’m at a dead end here..Any suggestions on designs and accessories would be of great help! Thanks everyone

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

Well...that was our mother's era. I remember seeing a lot of light colors in her closet.

Ghararas were popular and so was chatapati. Anyone know what that is? I love chatapati, its so classic and beautiful.

There were also big shalwars in with large, stiff painchay and short fitted shirts on top.

Think lots of gota, big sheesha work and pastel colors (not necessary you have to do pastels).

I'll find out more for you, this is pretty neat!

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

tassels and fringe on the duputta coe to mind :@:

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

Sara, nope I dont know what a chatapati is, but i'm googling it up right now

I'm trying to do this for the valima, I think it'll be something different and interesting

Thanks for the suggestions Sara and Bonbonniere!

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

if you are thinking of doing this for the brides dress, i suggest you think again coz IMO it might end up looking like she is wearing a costume.

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

Bride2be, like I said earlier..I myself will be having my hair and makeup styled in this manner so i'm not really talking about the bride.

But that's a good point, let me just clarify..this entire concept is for myself and my attire at a wedding that i'm attending to.

I guess ur talking abt lappa, kiran... it looks good.but don't like it on bridal...

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

P moon, it'll def look good on u.. All the best..
but a big NO NO!!! for a bride.

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

this thread came to mind when i saw this picture
http://www.paklinks.com/gsmedia/files/15525/555.jpg

really pretty and not costumey but still traditional/glamarous

I’ve personally only seen this “old school” style at mayouns/mehndi/dholki type events. Not valimas, but I"m sure it will look nice if you do it right

Turquoise was a hot fav.. short shirts/kameez worn with flares (fitted) chiffon sari's with sleeveless blouses.. lots of flowers in the hair.. back-combed high hair.. and an eyeliner that swept-upwards at the ends.. heavily kohled eyes!

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

i think a well fitted above the knee shirt with no or very small chak in purple if ur gonna go with bright colour get it embroidered with a red or pink chooridaar or a tite shalwar …something like this:

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

Wear something with gauzy long sleeves.

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

deep neckline at the back with long sleeves looks sesky ;) .....use sequence in the kaam

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

Sould be really well fitted above the knee shirt, lycra-net churidaar with sequins and mile long gauzy sleeves:

Re: Retro/Vintage Fashion

mahismart thanks so much! Those are gorgeous designs.

Stylobabe, thanks a lot! That's exactly the picture that I have saved as my basic inspiration, but I was thinking about how to make that a bit more fancy so it's good enough for a valima (the purple one) I think a deep back neckline is a great idea!

Ah, I just hope this works as well as I'm imagining it in my head crosses fingers

i have the same earrings she’s wearing in this song! makes me like the song more
