Resume Question

How to keep resume to 2 pages… I am having a hard time limiting it to 2 pages… I have already removed all unreleated working experience, now it just has the work experience related to my field.

What should be the objective? I mean except that I want a job as a teacher.

How important is activities/community service, should I keep that section, considering that resume is going to 3rd page.

How about professional developmental workshops…should I keep them or delete them?

Also, I just realized that I have applied to quite a few jobs with wrong or lets say outdated objective…so now I am curious how much attention employers give on this objective part?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

oh and please excuse any typos…

Re: Resume Question

My resume is 4 pages long and that too after removing some extra stuff in it. Its really a line in the sand, if you know what I mean. You don't have to keep it at 2 pages.

Remove areas with too much white space, remove extra lines, use good fonts that look good in small size (10 pt) and is still very readable.

Professional development, etc. I am not too sure about - it really depends what the program was/is because it could potentially come up as question mark in an interview and you better have an answer that the other person would like and expects!

Resume format should be:

1) Name - Contact Info
2) Summary of Qualifications
3) Experience
4) Education
5) Training / Certifications
6) Professional Affiliation

Now the question is do you have to put all of your experiences, it depends on for what offer you are submitting. Three are fine & 5 are maximum. But if you are going to Executive positions, then ignore the reply !

Re: Resume Question

Lusi,

What's the standard for teachers? I mean... do you have to stick to 2 pages or is it just what you had in mind as a benchmark?

Different jobs and industries have different standards... I have a résumé which is 3 pages long - standard for an analyst/consulting type role and a CV which is 15 pages and counting...

In terms of what sections to keep/ditch... I'd say if the professional programs are relevant to the position you're applying for, or they speak to your qualifications and competencies, then you should keep them. Service stuff... I'd say is important for a teaching job - the section highlights the altruistic side of your personality which is a perception you need to induce in the reader's mind.

The objective may or may not be as important. In my opinion, it's something that is more useful for entry level positions... once you're in a professional field, more attention is paid to the work experience, qualifications and specific achievements in previous jobs.

I should also say that if your application is going to include other supplementary documents such as a teaching philosophy statement, then you can move some stuff from your résumé to those attachments.

Re: Resume Question

part of it is what is important, at one time my internships that had a whole block dedicated to them went to a section called other experience with a bullet for all work pre MBA, and are now just a bullet under education.

some work that used to have 5 bullets under it is down to 2-3 main ones, because the focus is more on the recent work.

details are not always helpful, and actually can be counter-productive depending on what you are going for. if its 4 pages worth of stuff that your peers simply dont have and it can make you stand out and its acceptable in your field then go for it, otherwise if its stuff that is a given and you ahve spent a page and half on it, it would mildly amuse recruiters and may just work against you.

Re: Resume Question

The lady who helped me fix my resume at student employment center told me that your resume shouldn't be more then 1 page long. Only president of united states have two page resume :D

Re: Resume Question

namaan I dont think there are hard and fast rules, if you have things to write abotu by all means do so, but question if it really warrants an extra page. these days with people moving around, after a few years you have a bunch of comapnies or bunch of roles to account for, and it is tricky on how to not shortchange yourself by limiting what you have but also not having a novella as an output

usually only true for recent grads with little or no work experience.

I have 5-6 experiences related to my teaching field, all of them are at different grades and different schools or programs, so I cannot combine them nor delete them.

What is the difference b/w qualification and education, I thought they both were the same things.

Umer bhai and X2, thank you for your detailed responses. I am getting my license in K-Grade 6. Yes, I have my philosophy of education and I will be writing a cover letter too. I don't know about the benchmarks but I was told by my career counselor at uni to limit the resume to 2 pages. We will have to show her the resume and get it approved before our big job fair in march. I wanted to get opinion how important other sections are as I wouldn't want her to completely delete a section just to get to that 2 page limit. I don't have too many details, I have tried to bullet point everything but I guess I will see if I can merge them.

Another question, what should go into a cover letter?

Nami, Like Umer bhai said, one page rule is normally for fresh graduates with limited or no experience but I have almost 6 yrs of experience in my feild with a wide range of programs so I don't think I can chop it all down to 1 page...lol

Re: Resume Question

Hello Everybody:

In my opinion a resume should not be long then one page, Resume has a very clear single purpose that is to get you an interview. You only had to give just basic important points about yourself in concise way you can left to detail to the interview.

Looking at the number of resumes that are recieved by the employers no one has the time to read 4,3,2 pages they just give it a quick look, and a single page concise resume also represents your communication ability to shrink down details.

One had to remember that, they are getting information through to tired mind bored by looking regularly to alot of resumes.

As someone mentioned - 1-2 page resumes only applicable to entry level /associate level positions. If you are applying to senior management positions - you can do 3-4 pages.

It important to list out the RELEVENT work experience and if that requires 3-4 pages - so be it.

I would hire people that have ample experiences in the type of skills that I require for the job posted and if that is depicted in the resume - the better it is.

Re: Resume Question

My CV is only 2 pages, as in the U.K when applying for a teaching position you do not send your CV. You fill in an application form and then there is a separate section for 'Knowledge, Skills and Experience' which has to be no longer than 2 pages. This KSE section must also include ones personal statement. Its really hard knowing what to cut out. I too have over 10 years experience of working in schools, I just cut out 5 years worth as I wanted to include all my CPD stuff. I focused on recent experiences, especially my uni placements as that is the single most advanateg you have over someone who has teaching experince, you are more knowledgeble with recent teaching methods. Thats your selling point so I would focus on that.

Having now secured my job, I know now that Head Teachers in the U.K do not really read more than 2 pages worth of CV's and Personal Statements. My last school, where I was the TA, it was up to the receptionist to open all mail, and if she decided that she did not like anyones application it would never get passed on to the Head Teacher.

You might have your own opinion but as per my research, single page resumes are much preferable, Do you know that bill gates has a single page CV, How senior are you talking about?

Re: Resume Question

probably u shd try a professional resume builders... they mite help..

Where did you get Bill Gates’s resume? would love to see that.

Executives positons have different recruiters and they really don’t apply through the same channels as associate/managers positions.

I have been in the business for a long time and have yet to see a 2 page resume for someone who is applying for a position with more than 5 years work experience.

Writing Executive Resumes

I didn’t seen bill gates resume personally but heard about it, its known at technical forums, Anyways here is link to a quite popular nice podcast on resumes for managers it sums it all about resume.

http://www.manager-tools.com/2005/10/your-resume-stinks

The same site contains some other good podcasts regarding career etc.

dude... may be that's cuz he doesn't need a resume... for the rest of us, our name doesn't really do the talking for us :)

You are right that his name tells it all :)

Make sure there are no typos in the resume.............Right?

Two pages Only......................Naaah.........just check the Website.......:D

On a serious note..............

Your resume can be more than one Page if you feel it will not fit on one page..

Then summarize it on the "One Page" accompanying letter!

that way if they like the summary, they will read the long version too!

Good Luck.................US Govt needs many border police personell..........:)
