It was a constant struggle since the last two years. The lawyers and public as a whole faced the brunt of state power over this issue. The only fault of public was that they supported the Lawyers in restoration of Chief Justice of Pakistan Ch. Iftikhar Chaudhry.
Politics in Pakistan today are as dirty as they get. While the nation of Pakistan and Pakistani public rejoiced at the news of CJ being restored, there were those political individuals who were continually busy sowing the seeds of discontent and hatred. They will not be forgotten.
Let there be doubt in anyone’s mind that this is not one person’s or one group’s victory, but that it is the victory of Pakistani people who showed the public power which forced the Govt. to give up its stubborn stance and give in to the demands of the public and lawyers.
This has been a successful Pakistani movement, and no ill-seeking individuals will succeed in putting wedges between people and making this a provincial issue. Those who try to agitate and stir racial sentiments will be remembered.
Today’s show Bolta Pakistan focused much of its content in taking callers from all over the nation, but specifically Sindh to measure the atmosphere and mood of the public in that part of the nation. Every caller said unanimously that Pakistani public is happy, and that public of Sindh is as happy as the public of Quetta/Lahore/Rawalpindi/Islamabad, further confirming the hate-spreaders.
Watch the show, and enjoy. A good day to be a Pakistani…
It’s also important to add that no one person or party should plant the seeds of hate among people just because the verdict is to their dislike. This is democracy and the public has voiced their verdict on this issue.
He's not a magician. He was sacked illegally by the then dictator, and it was owed to him that he be restored.
There are many people in Pakistan who are thankful to him, from what i heard in a news segment he had heard over 9000 cases of ordinary citizens who were victims to the injustice of police and other authorities. The steel mill issue, missing person case, etc.
So, the restoration is not a favor bestowed upon him by the Govt., it is rather a reversal of an illegal step, which is a good thing and has been welcomed by the public and other segments of the society. How he conducts himself is yet to be seen...
To be fair, we don't even know the depth of the terms on which he is restored/reinstated, so there is much left to speculation and more light will be shed on it in the coming days i guess.
and what great miracles will this Chief Justice do?
i dont know what miracles he would do but what he did were as follows:
1) Mano Bhel case: one of the most powerful feudal of sanghar ara of sindh was put behind bars for kidnapping mano bhel family.
Bhels are kind of gypsies in sindh who wonder around and their way of life is either farming of begging.
mano bhel was wondering for justice since last 8-10 years and no one listened to him.
2)wani case in kashmore dist of sindh: one of the most powerful feudal of the rea and current sitting miniter was declared offender and his warrants for arrests were issued , it shook the fudals of sindh to the core and that guy was running from the law unless CJ was sacked.
no more jirgas and no more wani cases untill he was CJ.
3) steel mill case: every one knows about it.
4) missing persons case: every one knows about it, atleast 100 people recovered.
It was a symbolic movement. A message to the generals to think twice before conquering Pakistan again.
CJ Iftikhar is no saint. Nor he is the savior of Pakistan. It was just that we do not want constitution of Pakistan and our rights violated and mutilated by generals time and again.
Agree with the first part of your statement. disagree with the second. This is not ‘democracy’ nor is this a public verdict, atleast a good way of delivering the public verdict.
Consider the situation in any other modern democracy. Bush had made some pretty bad moves over the past eight years. He was beaten up in the media every day. Did anyone try to create a situation where outside powers or the army needed to threaten the President with a coup? Read this:
When he made bad moves, Bush/the republicans were thrown out in 2006 and 2008 through democratic processes. Not by their army chief.
I wish this had happened through a democracy strengthening route. Personalities dont matter, in the short term we are stuck with jackasses. We need the system to function lazzais faire so to speak, and train people to voice dissent through the system, not outside it. Otherwise we are doomed to keep electing this lot every few years, since there is never accountability through ballot boxes.
and what great miracles will this Chief Justice do?
We " The People of Pakistan" do not expect miracles from him....but we believe in Judicial Independence
Judicial independence is the principle that judges should be free to use their best judgment to interpret and apply the law without fear of punishment. When truly independent, judges are not influenced by personal interests or relationships, the identity or status of the parties to a case, or external economic or political pressures. The principle is the core of judicial authority and extends to all functions of the court system that are necessary to the exercise of constitutional judicial powers
His restoration is a big step towards judicial independence and Pakistanies are happy about it.
Now cheer up...and dont expect that he will split the moon into two..or he will make a passage in the dead sea.
There were 'democratic' negotiations going on for the past one year, with dialogues and agreements and you know what happened to them.
There is a difference between 'democratic' right to demonstrate v/s riot (may 12, Khi)
The lawyers movement is 2 years old and the restoration is not a result of one day of demonstrations.
You missed the point. In the end, it was threat of violence by an unruly mob that forced the army and internal forces to intervene and force Zardari's hand. True, you got your wish today, but tomorrow it could be someone else using an unruly mob to force your hand.
I don't think some of you understand what is in store for pakistan.
and what great miracles will this Chief Justice do?
In simple words
1. He will be the CJ for the life time
2. People will bow to him, not for what he has done (he has not done anything), but for what he stands for. For those who don't know, he stands for "taking panga" with the government basically.
3. People who support PML-N, now have assurance, that no cases will ever be opened against PML-N leaders.
4. If you committed a crime, join PML-N, and sins will be washed away.
5. Finally, removing, changing face, re-instating, taking over, resigning are the only joys of democracy this illusioned nation has. To keep things interesting, we need some news every 3 months, else democracy gets boring. We know what happens when democracy gets boring, people want regime change, by hook or crook.
Yeah, sure power of the people. People who have problem with going out and vote properly, yet are ready to burn things on the road. and they want democracy, spoiler alert!
Pakistan is a chaotic anarchic state whose people vote on tribal, ethnic and religious lines rather for politicians who actually promise to deliver goods....
What Pakistan needs is a sense of unity and purpose which it does not have
And thus the only way to solve Pakistan is for a very stern dictator to come to power in Pakistan someone on the lines of Hitler or Stalin to kill a lot of bad apples and set this country straight.......

that was no Mob but collection of people and there was no threat of violence unless provoked massively...
if next time someone has the genuine grievances and has legitimate public support why not to honor their wishes...
by the way in pakistan if there is an city where mob mentality still remain that is Karachi.
you and other guy trying desperately to prove yourself right without a point....

this is how an illiterate taliban thinks...
they want to do it for their version of islam and you for your perception to rid the pakistan of all evils sitting in canada watching tv...
you blame pakistanis for being ignorant, tribal etc but you dont seem to be different.
**JENEVA: UN Human Rights chief has welcomed Pakistan’s decision to reinstate deposed Chief Justice Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry and other judges sacked during the 2007 emergency as an important step in restoring the rule of law in the country.
Navi Pillay also welcomed the government’s pledge to free opposition activists and leaders who had been arbitrarily detained over the past week, Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said.
“Reinstating all of the 60 judges who had been sacked by the previous administration was an important step in the process of restoring the rule of law in Pakistan,” he said.
“The current government appears to be showing willingness to respond to concerns voiced by its people regarding their human rights and the integrity of the judicial system,” he said, adding that the High Commissioner calls on the government to release all activists arrested during the recent protests.
Mr.Colville noted that since last year, Pakistan has taken a number of steps to promote human rights and the rule of law, including signing and ratifying global treaties and establishing a Ministry for Human Rights.
How do you think we can become a developed nation? what are the first steps to be taken and who should be taking those steps?
I have asked many people the same question and it was never answered .. i wonder y...
its easy in theory. take out the chaudries, iftikhar, altaf, zardari, and CERTAINLY the not so sharifs from power. euthanize them. Then you make follow the rules already in place that reward merit as opposed to nepotism.
mr. iftikhar along with all the major players we have been seeing for the past 15 years are characters incharge of the feudal system we have in place right now. Maybe someone should rip these people of their "Zameens" and give an example to the rest of the jageerdaars?
