Nawaz Sharif says that making Musharraf COAS was his biggest mistake. It was not a mistake but an act with malafide intentions. He wanted to reign in Gohar Ayub factor in his party who would have become very powerful (in theory) by appointment of Ali Quli (a thorough professional) as COAS. Alongwith Musharraf we should not forget Nawaz Sharif for his cunningness which has brought us here. Make him PM and again he will do something like this

MKF I agree about Nawaz Sharif's cunningness, and the certainty that if brought back he will be as worse as before if not more and I also agree that any other leader of the past brought back would only be as bad as before, but I'm not sure if Gen Ali Kuli Khan's appointment as COAS would have made Gohar Ayub very powerful. Ali Kuli's sister is Gohar's wife i.e. to say that Gen Habibullah Khan, Gen Ali Kuli's father was Gohar Ayub's father in law and yet FM Ayub Khan had made Gen Musa the C-in-C and not Gen Habibullah, so we cant really say if Ali Kuli's being COAS would have mattered in that way. As we cant be sure how deeply their families have involved politics in their relationships over the decades. But yes, in pursuit for absolute power and stronghold Nawaz may have had such schemes on his mind as key factor. Getting down to the comparison between Musa and Habibullah and Musharraf and Ali Kuli; the final selection was no doubt done on basis of personal preference, but both cases were of officers from the same course, with minor career diff, similar experience, courses and seniority diff. So calling one professional and implying the other otherwise is rather unfair.

one way or the other , Army might be thinking of talking power
otherwise 12 may incident might not happen
and might be some of the brigades might had come out to help nawaz shareef
but they don't come , that shows that there was plan and every one in Army at that time knows that they were going to take over
and rest Allah knows better

Well Zuberi, it is true that both were professionals but CGS is naturally the dream of all corps commanders and only one of them becomes. Being senior (yes PA number makes the difference here) and the CGS it was very right for Ali Quli to become COAS.

mehere! i have heard that 111 Brigade has contigency plans ready for army takeover updated regularly always and they are top secret. Other wise 111 Brigade is a reserve brigade of 10 Corps and has to operate in Kashmir so why it is placed in Pindi. One of its battalion is President Guard but the other two are simply "Damocles Sword" over the government.

I doubt that idiot nawaz sharif would learn from his mistakes, his IQ is too low to learn, BB on the other hand will always be handicapped by her husband, I hope she cuts a deal with Musharraf and climb on the sinking ship only to commit political suicide

I agree, NS was perhaps themost stupid PM we have had. He preferred power hungry generals over professionals who wanted to do their job.

The saddest part of Gen Musharraf's demise is that he has probably given new life to both of these idiots to play a game with country for next 10 years and that will again legitimize some General (He might currently be some brigadier). This is a cycle which is repeating regularly in Pakistan and it seems the loop will never end.
