As part of my degree, I have chosen an Islamic law module. The main ‘textbooks’ we use are the Qu’ran (English translation by Yusuf Ali), an Islamic dictionary and another book in which the Qu’ran is heavily quoted. For our exam we are allowed to take a copy of the Qu’ran into the examination and are allowed to make references in it.
Our class is composed of 5 Muslims and 5 non- Muslims and basically I do not carry the Qu’ran or the other textbooks with me to lecture just in case I may disrespect them in any way unintentionally. If I do take them, I tend to ensure I have wudu. I am not going to annotate the copy I have either as I personally feel as though that might be disrespectful.
Is it disrespectful for a non-believer to touch and not give the Qu’ran the respect it deserves (say it is a girl and she may be on her time of the month)? Should I say something to the lecturer (who himself is a Muslim but has not raised this issue)?
Thus far I have really wanted to say something to those people who leave the Qu’ran in their bag and place it on the floor, yet have bit my tongue and refrained from saying anything.
You can raise your concerns and your concerns are genuine. If they do not take your advice they will be responsible. You would have done you duty.
Please be very humble and respectful when you do that. That humbleness and respect you show might help them follow your advice.
I think you should raise the issue to your tutor, he should know better.
But even if your the only one in the class that sticks to whats right fine.
Let them do whatever they want, they will learn one way or another, as long as you do your best.
jise karni wesse parni!:whistling
If they don’t apply the proper respect it’s up to you what you want to do, personally as, a guy, i’d kick up a right royal storm! i’d let them all know what i think of thier behaviour and if they try to stop me or continue to violate our sacred texts then i’d quit on them.. But in this matter your better suited than i to decide what to do.
But i’m proud of you for keeping your cool. Seriously your my sister indeed. :aliyish1:
PS:Good luck with your studies hope you do well and make us all proud!
It has both English and Arabic text. Furthermore, the other textbooks have direct quotes from the Qu'ran too.
Mirch, I am finding it hard to approach the lecturer. He has a very carefree attitude. There is only one lecturer for this module and that is him. He has already stipulated that any disagreements with him or beliefs which do not hold well with him, he will mark us down. I am a bit stuck as to how to approach this matter.

That is not encouraging free thinking. He is basically being a dictator. Dean or Head of the department should be contacted.
But respect of Quran comes from within. You are responsible to just voice your concerns once that is all and your job is done.
In Quran it is said many a times " wama alaina ilaal bilagh"
Our job is just to pass the message.
I say let it be. We cant going around kicking anyone who we think might disrespect our Holy book.
We see the Holy Quran in libraries and bookshops everyday and there is a true risk of it getting disrespcted here to but we dont say anything about it. Lets try not to enforce our beliefs on others!
On a sidenote it is good that your conscience raised this point!
And if others don’t give us the respect we deserve we give them one chance to apologise…
if they still don’t see sense then get them!(nicely first, but prepare to be brutal!)
Nobody has a right to trash anybodys faith! if they do it unknowingly then let them have a chance to apologise if its deliberate then action is an inevitable!
