Respect For Authority: Police Officer in Pakistan vs. The U.S

What are your views on why police is treated so differently in Pakistan as compared to the U.S?

From what I have seen, there is really no respect for Pakistani police officers, maybe they haven’t earned it, that’s why? Yet, in the U.S, when you see a police officer you give them respect, if a police officer dies in a shooting in a community, there is a public condolence period for him/her and his/her family.

Also, is a police officers life more important than a normal citizen, because they put their lives on the line on a daily bases?

Re: Respect For Authority: Police Officer in Pakistan vs. The U.S

Police in Pakistan only cares for $$$$. I have had personal experiences and so do many of our friends when faced with terrible situations. They are, not all, but a huge number corrupt, good-for-nothing sleazeballs.

Re: Respect For Authority: Police Officer in Pakistan vs. The U.S

It's nothing to be proud of but a large number of police officials at the higher levels are quite corrupt and they have given the entire profession a bad name. Meanwhile there are some of the lower staff who do manage to do their duties with fairness and honesty but eventually succumb because they are usually threatened, tipped off by the zameendar and the influential political figures.

So all in all people are either afraid to deal with the Pakistani police or they just swear at them all the time !

Re: Respect For Authority: Police Officer in Pakistan vs. The U.S

Corruption in the police force is truly representative of the entire justice system in Pakistan.
Whether it is by choice (i.e. greed), through peer pressure or because they are left with no other option but to demand money under the table to keep their families fed.....corruption is rampant.

Do I have any respect for them.....unfortunately not because try as I may to have sympathy for the few that continue to work hard for an honest living, the actions of the many serve too well to taint my impression of the entire group.

As far as the police forces in North America are concerned......corruption still exists.....but at a much more discreet level.

Re: Respect For Authority: Police Officer in Pakistan vs. The U.S

You sure you are not mixing respect with fear?

Writ of any authority is always based on Respect AND Fear. Unfortunately in Pakistan authorities have lost both. People dont respect them because of their conduct and they dont fear them because authorities normally fail to hold people accountable or punish them for what they have done.

Even in west Writ of the police is not only because of respect but also fear. I know many people who dont respect Police but they follow the law/orders out of fear.

Re: Respect For Authority: Police Officer in Pakistan vs. The U.S

I guess fear is part of it. But I have been raised and taught in school that police officers are the ones who protect you, and they put their lives on the line on a daily bases. But for most people it could be more fear than respect.

And yes there is corruption in the west within the police force, no question about it but no where near to Pakistan as there are no checks and balances there with in the system.

Perhaps you've not been exposed to the corrupt police-officers in Pakistan. They rape ask for bribes and and have no ethics whatsoever. I think they become a totally different entity after they've been inducted in to the force. They loose all morals and just go on a free for all grab what you can pillage and take advantage of their power ride. There has been less that 0.09% of justice done in Pakistan by the Pakistani Police. I remember once we had a robbery in Pakistan in my uncles house and we went to report the incident. The police officer seemed to know who the culprits were and instead asked out right that we pay him 20,000 rupees for the FRI. There can never be any respect because these police officers don't even know what respect is, they're just out there to make as much money as they want. They're just like thugs but the only difference is that they're government officials just like the politicians.
