Researchers

Anyone here into research?

I recently started working with a professor at my uni as a research assistant. And I am really liking it and am now considering grad school with the focus of going into research professionally.

My question is to those that are into conducting research or working as researchers, what kind of jobs do you get? Who employes researchers? Is researcher the career title? Im thinking of going to grad school for sociology. I know it might sound dumb, but I really don’t know who to ask about this! :bummer:

Re: Researchers

It largely depends on the area you are in.

Some industries (cannot think of a better word), like engineering or pharma, hire researchers. In some areas, research is confined to universities, in which case you'd be much better off with a Phd. If you are not much into teaching, some universities have career paths like Research Associate ---> Research Fellows who are primarily involved with only research with minimal teaching. If you do complete a doctoral program, you'd normally be expected to do some teaching as well if you choose academia as a career.

Outside academia, for sociology, some governmental and non-governmental agencies like WHO, UNESCO, etc. hire researchers and then there is a whole army of non-profit organizations who hire them. Career paths and titles depend on the organization involved.

Your professor and his/her colleagues are the best people to seek advice from, IMO.

Re: Researchers

I love researching...

And if I am paid to do it even better....

Technically I am working for myself at the moment.
