Globalization is a major player in this figure. Developed nations feed off low income, cheap brains and even cheaper labour from developing nations. This is capitalism in over drive, rich get rich beyond their wildest dreams and the poor fall deeper and deeper in poverty.
Waisay you also have to look the lifestyle for most indian (or any third world country’s villagers). 50 cents is 20 rupees in India. It may seem like a pathetic sum in metropolitan areas but in villages it might not be so bad. Sometimes 20 rupees could just be enough to get by. Villagers dont have as many bills to pay such as phone, internet, electricity, water, mortgages, rents etc. Life without all this still exists in many places around the world
Theres this one documentary i saw about an islander from an island called Diego Garcia (now a US military base) and how her life was perfect where she lived, before the british government expelled her and 2000 other fellow islanders to rent that island out to the USA to be used as a military base for 50 years. Anyway so she said life was such that they did not have to pay for anything except for the clothes they wore.

Well that may be true, but I actually see Indians atleast trying to solve their problems. Not saying that every single one is trying their best, but a good number seem to be forward looking people who have realized that hard work and education are their way out of it

The report must also include school going children, house wifes who dont work and retired people. Thatz why it has come up to 77%.

Its hilarious to see people on this site get involved in personal attacks rather than discussing the article in question.
Some genius just said they include women n children n so forth, my dear friend, EVERY country's income figures actually are inclusive for the entire population. And Queer, Gurgaon is possibly a queer place in India, you're forgetting the Assams, the Behars, the Punjabs and the Tamil Nadus!
I guess reality makes some feel really insecure, specially when it blows the bubble of media generated hype.

The problem is that countries like India and China have massive populations and thus large numbers of them will remain in poverty. There is simply not enough money in this world to lift billions of people out of poverty.

^ According to the WHO the amount of money spent on cosmetics every year around the world is enough to eradicate world hunger. And thats only cosmetics.

Talking like a true patriotic Indian- this is the problem with us, Pakistanis. Instead of praising our country we praise others. I haven't seen a single Pakistani applaud Afghans who are rebuilding their nation and maybe in 5 years might be a better place to live than Bengalore or Bombai.

China lifted over 420 million people out of poverty, in less than 30 years.

Looks like the dictatorships in China seem to be outperforming the democracy in India.

The problem is that countries like India and China have massive populations and thus large numbers of them will remain in poverty. There is simply not enough money in this world to lift billions of people out of poverty.
However, it is their massive population that is helping them rise. In my own theory, as the dispersion of education becomes easier, those countries with the highest populations will rise to the top of super power stati.

China has made tremendous achievments in growing it’s economy and taking close to half a billion people out of poverty. Others like India look on in awe.
