Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

I don’t know why we need so many nukes…dozen or two should be enough…I think.

Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power : The Two-Way : NPR

Pakistan could have 350 nuclear warheads sometime in the next decade, becoming the world’s No. 3 nuclear power by outpacing rival India and several other nations in bomb-making, according to a new report issued by two think tanks.

The report, A Normal Nuclear Pakistan, written by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Stimson Center, says: “in the next five to 10 years Pakistan could have a nuclear arsenal not only twice the size of India’s but also larger than those of the United Kingdom, China, and France, giving it the third-largest arsenal behind the United States and Russia.”

In 2013, estimates of the size of Pakistan’s current nuclear arsenal ranged from about 90 to 120 warheads. The report says that Islamabad could step up production to about 20 nuclear warheads a year. “Many observers have concluded that Pakistan’s rate of fissile material production (and assumed construction of nuclear weapons) gives it the fastest-growing nuclear weapons stockpile,” the report says.

“The growth path of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, enabled by existing infrastructure, goes well beyond the assurances of credible minimal deterrence provided by Pakistani officials and analysts after testing nuclear devices,” the it adds.

According to the Federation of American Scientists, Cold War rivals Russia and the United States possess by far the lion’s share of the world’s nuclear arsenal, with an estimated 7,500 and 7,200 warheads, respectively. France, China and the United Kingdom each possess between 200 and 300 warheads, while India is currently thought to have about 100.

As The Washington Post notes: “Western officials and analysts have struggled for years to get an accurate assessment of Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities. Several Pakistani analysts questioned the findings of the report, saying it is based on a faulty assumption that Pakistan is using all of its existing stockpiles of fissile material to make nuclear weapons.”

One critic, nuclear expert Mansoor Ahmed of Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad, is quoted by The Express Tribune as saying that he believes that Pakistan can’t make more than 40 or 50 new warheads over the next several years.

“This report is overblown,” Ahmed is quoted by the Pakistan-based English-language daily as saying. However, he acknowledged: “What the world must understand is that nuclear weapons are part of Pakistan’s belief system. It’s a culture that has been built up over the years because [nuclear weapons] have provided a credible deterrence against external aggression.”

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

"...could have..." and "....and assumed construction of nuclear weapons...." are the key words fear mongering 'analysts' are ignoring.

Unless, Saudis push Pakistan too hard into it, would we be using all our uranium to make weapons?

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Is the author Indian? Because all his fears and predictions are based on "ifs" &."BUTS".

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

what we got is enough to keep our errant neighbour in check. We really dont need more.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Still 199th in the world in Literacy. What an irony!!

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

May be trying to threaten the world from terrorist Pakistan

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Why do they need to construct so many War heads? Because they can, and because if its worth building one its worth building many. Another words if one nuke is terrifying enough, a hundred or more should be more then sufficient to prevent any adventurism from the other side.

Also I think the underlying factor which motivates such a build up is the fear not only of an attack from India, but from many other potential threats real or imagined.... The fear perhaps that certain nations may try to undermine Pakistan's nuclear capability by sabotage or through more direct means... Hence the more war heads the more difficult it is for a third party to take control.

Thankfully its highly unlikely they will ever actually be used...

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

No wonder this country will always be illiterate and backwards. :(

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

but they are getting more and more aggressive these days…

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Sad that people are posting this on fb as if it is something to be proud of.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Blame the corrupt, incompetent and traitorous politicians for illiteracy, when they'd spend billions making pointless Metro buses, all the whilst getting clapped by morons.

Building nukes has nothing whatsoever to do with this.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Well, it kind of does when Pakistan could be upgrading its manufacturing facilities and building all of Jf-17s, ships etc on its own soil for cheaper. You could also eventually sell them to other countries for a bigger profit. Look at banglore and how it started out as an indian aerospace hub before the private sector took hold.

I also wonder where all the money for Suparco has dried up? Pakistan has ballistic missile technology and I am pretty sure ICBM tech as well, though it hasn't made any since it would ring alarms in israel and the US, so we could be launching our and neighborhood satellites in space .

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

In case you haven't realised, nukes cost many, many times more than buses - which help people get to work.

If Pti started a bus transport scheme in KP, I am sure you would be very happy with it.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

In case you haven't realised, politicians have looted trillions. Millions of rupees are being stolen everyday.

Blaming nukes shows a severe lack of awareness. Stop believing the diatribe against Pakistan and its nukes.

And no, I wouldnt be happy with a bus transport scheme anywhere in the country when people are dying on the streets, have no electricity, basic healthcare or education.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Just politicians? Who has ruled Pak half it’s existence?

You admit there is no basic healthcare, yet you still don’t see why Pak has enough nukes, and does not need hundreds more.

Thinking like yours keeps this country backwards and illiterate…of course, what would you know about the ground reality in Pakistan, sitting in London!

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Sigh.

I repeat: politicians have looted trillions.

If this wasn’t happening, despite having an extra 100,000 nukes we’d be right up there on top of the bloody world, in terms of EVERYTHING.

What do nukes have to do with that? What does building more nukes have to do with the fact Nawaz Sharif just stole another 100,000 in the minute it’s taken me to type this post?

I’m not sitting in London. I know more about the ground reality than you’d think. A lot lot more. Don’t be so quick to throw childish insults at people you know nothing about.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Great, so you talk about rulers looting - and you ignore the biggest rulers/looters of all!

Corruption is obviously a huge problem, but if you don't realise why spending billions on **extra **nukes, rather than the development of the country is an issue - you will never understand Pakistan's needs - again why would you when you are obviously from London.

Good night from Pakistan!

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

Your I.P is from England too mere bhai.

I don't normally do this but I am tired of this insult on GS, which is hilariously thrown at expats from expats(!), there have been far too many namoonay doing it in the past too. You're a great poster who (unlike a lot others can criticise their own party and I have utmost respect for you) can challenge others using his arguments and intellect so why throw this out?

Argue the topic, no poster knows the history of another poster on GS, just because someone is sitting in London or Tokyo does not mean their viewpoints are invalid.

We are all passionate about the situation in Pakistan, lets face it we wouldn't be here if we weren't, so lets all try to remember that.

Re: Report: In A Decade (Or Sooner), Pakistan Could Be No. 3 Nuclear Power

:D

You're clueless if you think the army has looted more than politicians, absolutely and utterly clueless.

Do you know what anti-missile systems India has? Whether they can detect and counter our nukes? They're spending 36 billion annually on their defence, who knows what technology they have to counter any missiles we have made in the past. Technology - both offensive and defensive is always progressing, at an alarming rate. Anything we might have made 10 years ago may now be obsolete/easily counter-able or simply not as effective.

Who are you to say how many nukes are extra? I'll tell you who - a liar and a hypocrite who is professing to be in Pakistan but posting from England :D. Do you really have to lie on an internet forum to try and sound -in your mind- credible? Get a life, pal.

To me it doesn't matter where you're any Pakistani is posting from when it comes to discussing our country. You will still be embarrassingly clueless irrespective of whether you're posting from Islamabad or Antarctica.
